On the nights of August 19–21, 2023, Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture produced blue-white bioluminescence intense enough to read by, with over a hundred reports from tour boat operators and fishermen describing the entire bay surface glowing. Analysis confirmed Noctiluca scintillans (sea sparkle) densities of tens of thousands per liter — several hundred times the typical observed value. Researchers attributed the bloom to a convergence of record high sea surface temperatures, stagnant post-storm enriched water, and a southeasterly wind advecting offshore populations into the bay. No event of comparable scale had been recorded in Matsushima Bay.

Details

Matsushima Bay in central Miyagi Prefecture is a ria coastline recognized as one of Japan's Three Views. Noctiluca scintillans, a globally distributed marine dinoflagellate, produces blue-white bioluminescence under physical agitation. Sporadic appearances are normal; dense blooms occur in eutrophic waters.

On the night of August 19, a tour boat operator maneuvering in the bay noticed that the vessel's wake was producing sweeping blue-white light, and that the entire bay surface was luminous. After local news coverage, the nights of August 20 and 21 drew large numbers of observers to the shore. Witnesses described light bright enough to read by and light bands spreading from each wave.

A research team from Tohoku University collected seawater samples. Microscopic analysis confirmed Noctiluca density in the tens of thousands per liter — orders of magnitude above the few dozen to few hundred per liter typically observed.

The team identified three converging factors: (1) record high sea surface temperatures in summer 2023 (2–3°C above the seasonal norm); (2) eutrophic bay water becoming stagnant rather than flushing after the passage of a low-pressure system the week before; (3) a gentle southeasterly wind advecting an offshore Noctiluca population into the enclosed bay.

The researcher noted that while such conditions had occurred in varying combinations before, a bloom of several-hundred-times normal density had not been previously recorded in Matsushima Bay. An unquantified additional factor contributing to the scale cannot be excluded.
