Summary
In August 2019, three hikers in Aokigahara Forest at the foot of Mount Fuji witnessed a pale blue light drifting through the trees at roughly human height. The light moved without casting shadows and could not be captured on camera. The following morning, a circular patch of withered undergrowth was found at the site, along with localized geomagnetic anomalies inconsistent with the basalt terrain. The Bureau has recorded similar reports every summer since 2014.
Details
At 22:47 on August 23, 2019, a party of three on a night hike through Aokigahara Forest observed a pale blue light seeping between the trees ahead. It hovered roughly 1.5 meters above the ground, swaying at regular intervals, moving neither toward nor away from the group. It cast no shadows. It left no reflected glow on surrounding surfaces. Attempts to photograph it with smartphones failed — the cameras could not establish focus.
The light drifted through the trees for approximately four minutes before sinking toward the ground and vanishing. When one member of the group approached the disappearance point, they noted that the soil beneath a fallen log felt unusually warm. The following morning, a local nature guide confirmed the location: a roughly circular three-meter patch of withered undergrowth, its roots splayed outward in a radial pattern.
Geomagnetic readings taken at the center of the withered area showed a localized drop of approximately 12 milligauss compared to the surrounding terrain. While Aokigahara is known for magnetic anomalies caused by its basalt lava base, Bureau technicians noted that this drop could not be explained by lava tube formations. No comparable reading had been recorded at that location in prior survey data.
Similar luminous object reports have reached the Bureau every summer since 2014, typically between August and September, concentrated in the late-night hours. Locations shift slightly year to year but share a common geological feature: proximity to the lava flow terminus on Fuji's northern slope. In 2017, two independent groups filed reports on the same night; their accounts matched in both timing and compass bearing.
Candidates ruled out include phosphorescence (soil analysis showed insufficient phosphorus concentrations), bioluminescent fungi (samples collected from the site showed no luminescent capacity), and ball lightning (no thunderstorm activity was recorded in the area on the relevant nights). No natural explanation has been established.
The Bureau continues annual summer observations of the area. The record grows. The cause does not.
