Itsukushima Shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its iconic floating torii gate. The Noh stage where the anomaly was observed was restored in 1997; it is a wooden platform open to the sea on one side and accessible on foot at low tide.
Around 4:00 p.m. on November 8, 2020, a shrine official conducting pre-closing cleaning noticed a sharply defined human-shaped dark region on the eastern end of the Noh stage floor. It extended in a direction opposite to the angle of the late-afternoon sunlight from the west. No person was present in the area. When the official attempted to redirect light from other angles onto the spot, the shadow did not change.
Photographs recorded by the official show a clearly bounded dark area on the floorboards that appears significantly darker than the surrounding planks and is visible to the naked eye. The phenomenon was confirmed again on November 15, with records noting it was most distinct between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. As December approached and the sunset azimuth shifted toward the winter solstice, the effect became less pronounced.
An architectural materials specialist examined the Noh stage floorboards and noted that certain planks may contain a different resin composition than others, producing localized differences in reflective properties. However, attempts to reproduce the human-shaped shadow under the same light conditions did not succeed. Optical interference hypotheses were considered but not substantiated numerically.
Itsukushima has historically seen many maritime fatalities due to its extreme tidal range, and the tradition that "the sea's dead remain within the shrine precinct" is embedded in local culture. Shrine administration declined to comment on the case, stating that they "refrain from speaking carelessly about spiritual matters in a sacred place." The Bureau continues to collect observation records.
