Details
In the early morning of July 12, 2023, a local caravan crossing an unnamed dune area approximately 90 km north of Tessalit reported that a mountain in their direction of travel appeared abnormally close, then instantly receded into the far distance. Team members felt as if they had traveled several times the normal distance, though GPS records indicated only a short journey. This was the first report of anomalous perception.
Subsequently, on August 19, another caravan reported that at a specific point, a companion's voice suddenly became inaudible, and simultaneously, their figure vanished for several seconds as if dissolving into the desert's heat haze. A stone thrown by one of the members also disappeared before reaching the ground, with no impact sound produced. Multiple testimonies highlight a peculiar phenomenon where sound appears to be absorbed by the surroundings.
In response to these multiple reports, authorities dispatched a small drone equipped with specialized observation instruments and a small team of investigators on September 5, 2023. Drone footage captured the gradual distortion of specific rock formations over several minutes, followed by their return to original shapes. Furthermore, it confirmed the existence of a region at approximately 50m above ground level where certain electromagnetic waves experienced anomalous attenuation for brief periods.
Upon the investigation team's arrival on September 15, one member testified that a measurement device approximately 20m away suddenly vanished from sight and reappeared several seconds later in a completely different location (approximately 50m away).
