Summary
Between 2018 and 2020, security staff and visitors at the Aoba Castle ruins in Sendai, Miyagi, reported sighting a translucent or semi-solid human figure in period armor near the keep's stone walls during the thirty-minute window after sunset. Eight reports were collected in total. In each case, the figure disappeared before anyone could reach it. A visiting American tourist's photograph showed an indistinct human-shaped translucency near the stonework that had not been visible to the eye at the time of shooting.
Details
Aoba Castle (Sendai Castle) was built in 1601 by Date Masamune on a hill above what is now the center of Sendai. The castle grounds are now a public park; the main keep's stone walls and a famous equestrian statue of Date Masamune remain. The site's history spans centuries of samurai culture, the Meiji-era dismantling of the castle structures, and destruction in the 1945 air raids.
The first record, from November 2018, describes a night security guard who spotted a figure in armor standing near the north wall of the main keep's ruins during his evening rounds. The location was a restricted area. As he called out and approached, the figure was gone. He described the upper body as clearly defined but noted: "I couldn't see the feet. The armor shape was distinct."
Three visitor reports were filed in 2019. In one — from an American tourist — a photograph taken with a smartphone showed a semi-transparent human-shaped form near the stone wall. The tourist had not seen anyone there when the picture was taken. Examination of the image confirmed a humanoid translucency in the relevant area, though distinguishing it from stone patterning and light reflection was difficult.
In January 2020, castle park staff observed what appeared to be a figure seated on the stonework from thirty meters away. On approaching, no one was present. The snow-covered stone showed no trace of sitting or movement.
A researcher collecting eyewitness data from castle ruins across Japan assigned eight reports to this site, all clustered in the same post-sunset window. The possibility of a twilight-related visual illusion is acknowledged, though specialists note that the specific perception of an armed human figure exceeds what simple optical misidentification typically produces.
