On July 15, 2003, in the vicinity of Mont Saint-Martial, located in the Auvergne region of the French Massif Central, surveyor Jean Renault reported a spatial anomaly. Around 11:00 AM, while conducting a survey, his vision suddenly twisted; distant mountain ranges appeared unnaturally close, while the trees immediately before him felt distant, he testified. His GPS device temporarily lost its signal, and his mechanical wristwatch indicated a delay of several minutes.
Reports of similar phenomena had been sporadic in this region since the late 1990s. Hikers' testimonies of 'getting easily lost' and 'familiar landscapes appearing different' had been submitted to local authorities but were attributed to topographical factors or optical illusions. Additionally, an old legend persists in this mountain range about a 'forest that misleads travelers,' recounting tales of those who lost time and had their belongings vanish.
