On August 17, 2021, at 00:32 AM, István Kovács, a long-haul truck driver, encountered an inexplicable phenomenon on old National Road 83, which runs through Hungary's Bakony Forest. Approximately 50 meters ahead of his vehicle, the asphalt road began to warp as if reflecting on water. Simultaneously, trees along the roadside seemed to rapidly grow and decay, appearing like fast-forwarded footage. From the center of this distortion, a woman in archaic clothing reportedly began to slowly cross the road.
Kovács's testimony aligns with several past incidents reported in this region. The Bakony Forest has long been known as a mystical place, with legends of travelers and locals getting lost, experiencing hallucinations, or losing track of time. Specifically along this old National Road 83, strange reports such as 'the landscape burning' or 'the forest singing' have been sporadically recorded every few decades.
The agency confirmed a concentration of similar reports since 2019. On March 5, 2022, another driver reported witnessing an 'old horse-drawn carriage floating in the air, silently passing by' at the exact same location. The driver insisted he saw several passengers in the carriage, adding that they seemed unaware of his presence. These reports show no consistency in time of day or weather, but the appearance point was limited to approximately a 200-meter section of old National Road 83.
The agency installed multiple surveillance cameras and sensors around the reported location, attempting to record low-frequency sounds, electromagnetic waves, and temperature changes. However, specifically during the phenomena, some high-sensitivity cameras installed would freeze for several seconds, resulting in complete data loss for those periods.
