Summary

Since August 2023, numerous sightings of a colossal flying creature have been reported in the remote Central Andes of Colombia. Witnesses describe a gigantic shadow gliding overhead, accompanied by a tremendous roar and powerful downdraft during low-altitude flight. Authorities' investigation led to a drone losing control and crashing. This anomalous phenomenon bears a striking resemblance to local indigenous folklore of the "Sombra del Cóndor" (Shadow of the Condor).

Details

On August 17, 2023, in a remote forest near Cauca department within Colombia's Central Andes, a patrolling forest ranger witnessed a colossal shadow traversing the sky. The estimated wingspan reached 20 meters, and the tremendous roar and powerful downdraft generated during its low-altitude glide shook nearby trees and terrified the ranger. Its sheer scale far surpassed any known bird, including the Andean condor.

Similar sighting reports emerged from researchers and hikers in the surrounding areas over the subsequent weeks. Reports indicated that the creature frequently appeared at dawn or dusk, its presence becoming more pronounced on days with low clouds or thick fog. Its flight differed from the typical flapping of birds, characterized by a silent yet powerful glide as if a massive wing sliced through the air.

Upon receiving these reports, authorities immediately initiated an investigation, considering the potential impact on the local ecosystem. Remote-controlled drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and acoustic sensors were deployed to monitor the airspace. However, on multiple occasions, drones lost control due to what appeared to be unidentified electromagnetic interference, resulting in a total of three crashes in the mountains.

Data recovered from one of the crashed drones contained fragmented, noisy footage. For a brief moment, the silhouette of a gigantic flying object, backlit by the sun, was captured. Its outline suggested characteristics more akin to ancient reptiles than birds. Acoustic records revealed periodic vibrations of extremely low frequency, distinct from the calls or wingbeats of any known creature.

Local indigenous legends describe a colossal bird known as the "Sombra del Cóndor." It is said to be either a guardian of the mountains or an omen of disaster, with strange occurrences following where its shadow falls. This incident, with its striking resemblance to this folklore, possesses peculiarities that cannot be dismissed as mere misidentification of wildlife.

Currently, authorities have enhanced their wide-area surveillance, deploying low-frequency acoustic sensors and broad-coverage radar systems. However, clear physical evidence remains elusive. Sightings continue sporadically, and the ecology, purpose, and origin of this unidentified flying creature remain unsolved.

Witness Testimony

Forest Ranger AThat was no condor. The shadow covered the land, and the wind pressure made the trees writhe. Too immense. Something was looking down at me.
Hiker BWe were taking photos, and suddenly a dark mass appeared in the sky, blocking the sun. It wasn't an airplane; it was alive.
Acoustic Analyst CThe detected low-frequency sounds differ from any known bird's wingbeats. They are periodic, like something massive pushing air.

Kyu's Analysis
