Case No. #1551
Ethiopia, Danakil Desert: 'Mass-Losing Rocks' Object Anomaly Incident
Summary
On July 12, 2023, a geological survey team in Ethiopia's Danakil Desert reported a phenomenon where rock samples temporarily lost their mass. This anomaly occurred only at a specific location, with the mass returning to normal once removed from the site, defying existing physical laws. On-site investigations confirmed no particular changes in environmental factors, with multiple measuring instruments simultaneously showing abnormal readings. The authorities have not yet identified the cause of the phenomenon and are continuously monitoring the site as a special observation target.
Details
At 14:17 on July 12, 2023, a member of the international geological survey team "Erythron" reported a mass anomaly of rock samples in the Danakil Desert, Afar Region, northern Ethiopia, approximately 20 km northeast of Dallol Volcano. A small basalt fragment collected by the team member displayed less than half its normal mass on the weighing scale. Initially, instrument malfunction was suspected.
However, multiple different types of weighing instruments showed similar abnormal readings. Furthermore, when weighed several meters away from the specific location, the samples returned to their normal mass. This phenomenon occurred intermittently and was not limited to specific rock types; similar mass reductions were observed in surrounding soil samples. The survey team temporarily established a camp to begin detailed recording.
Interviews with local residents revealed the existence of ancient folklore in the region about "lightening stones." Stories persist of stones feeling incredibly light when picked up in certain places, only to return to their original weight or disappear when attempted to be carried away. Until now, these accounts were considered superstitions lacking scientific basis.
The special observation team dispatched by the authorities installed advanced mass measurement sensors, gravimeters, magnetometers, radiation detectors, and acoustic sensors at the site. Initial measurements detected no particular abnormalities in ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, magnetic fields, or radiation levels. However, at 03:12 on July 28, 2023, an installed gravimeter recorded a subtle fluctuation in the local gravitational constant. Simultaneously, the mass measurement sensor captured a phenomenon where the mass of the target object decreased by approximately 35%.
This phenomenon lasted for an extremely short duration, about 15 seconds, before slowly returning to its original state. The observation team noted that extremely faint low-frequency sound waves, at a pre-set specific frequency, were detected just before the phenomenon occurred. However, the source of these sound waves remains unknown, and a causal relationship between the sound waves and the mass reduction phenomenon has not been established.
The authorities analyzed samples collected from the site under strict control but have not succeeded in directly reproducing the mass fluctuation phenomenon. Analysis found no unknown substances or abnormal elemental compositions in the samples. This incident remains inexplicable within the scope of current physics, and the conditions for its occurrence, periodicity, and extent of influence are still undetermined. The authorities continue to monitor the site and gather further information and analysis.

Witness Testimony
Geological Survey Team Member AAt first, I thought it was a joke. The rock felt truly light in my hand. It was like holding air. I was sure the instrument was broken, but it showed the same result every time.
Local Resident B (Elder)There have always been strange places in this desert. Places where stones lose their soul when touched. Our ancestors taught us not to take anything from there. It's the first time scientists have come, but it seems they've seen the same thing.
Kyu's Analysis
This phenomenon contradicts existing physical laws. Continuous monitoring and multifaceted analysis are imperative.
