Case No. #1408
Incident of Periodic Subaquatic Luminescence in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland, accompanied by Peculiar Acoustic Patterns, Water Temperature Anomalies, and the Formation of Unknown Crystals from the Lakebed
Summary
Since 2018, periodic blue-white subaquatic luminescence has been observed at specific depths within Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in southeastern Iceland. This phenomenon is accompanied by peculiar acoustic patterns in specific frequency bands and localized water temperature increases in the surrounding waters. Furthermore, previous investigations have yielded crystalline substances of unusual shape and composition from the lakebed. While the authorities have deployed multiple observation instruments and are conducting detailed investigations, current scientific understanding offers no clear explanation for these complex phenomena. This anomalous incident suggests a potential unknown impact on the glacier lagoon's ecosystem and geological structure.
Details
At 23:47 on March 12, 2018, crew members of a tourist boat passing through Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon first observed a strong blue-white light emanating from approximately 20m below the surface. The light persisted for several minutes before rapidly diminishing. The area around the lake was quiet at the time, but one crew member reported feeling a strange, low-frequency vibration. This initial report was initially dismissed as a phenomenon related to glacier calving or geothermal activity.
Over the following months, similar reports of light and sound were sporadically submitted to authorities by tourists and local fishermen. The frequency of luminescence appeared to increase particularly during full and new moon nights, with reported locations consistently concentrating in a specific deep area of the lake, around coordinates 64.073°N, 16.242°W. An examination of past records by the authorities revealed several similar sightings of light and sound in the same lake from the 1970s, documented with sparse details. These testimonies were not verified by the scientific technology of the time and were treated as local folklore.
In the summer of 2019, the authorities deployed multiple underwater sonars, thermometers, photometers, and geomagnetic sensors to establish continuous monitoring. At 01:15 on August 21, 2019, the monitoring equipment simultaneously detected anomalous readings at the installed location. The photometers recorded momentary, impossibly high luminosity, and underwater microphones captured complex acoustic patterns never before observed. Concurrently, the water temperature in the surrounding area locally increased by up to 5 degrees Celsius, maintaining this state for several hours before gradually returning to normal.
Underwater drone surveys conducted in the spring of 2020 confirmed the presence of a circular area, approximately 50cm in diameter, at the center of the luminescence origin point. The bedrock surface within this area was dotted with highly transparent crystals not typically found on glacier lakebeds. These crystals possessed a molecular structure different from known minerals, and X-ray diffraction analysis detected traces of unidentified elements. However, the crystals exhibited extremely low stability, tending to transform into ordinary quartz and water immediately after collection, making detailed analysis exceedingly difficult.
Furthermore, it was discovered that subtle electromagnetic field disturbances occur in the vicinity when this phenomenon takes place. This has caused malfunctions in electronic devices, leading to intermittent data loss from some observation equipment. Authorities' experts considered multiple possibilities, including geothermal activity, subglacial water flow, and unknown microbial activity, but no single theory has yet been proposed that can simultaneously explain the luminescence, acoustics, water temperature increase, crystal formation, and electromagnetic field disturbance. Particularly, the property of the crystals to destabilize and revert to their original state defies existing geological and physical frameworks.
Since 2021, the authorities have deployed resident monitors around the lake and established an even more sensitive underwater sensor network. However, the occurrence of the phenomenon remains irregular, and no specific predictive model has been established. Among local residents, long-forgotten legends of an ancient power sleeping beneath the lake are once again being whispered. The authorities are carefully evaluating the correlation between these local legends and the actual observational data.
Currently, the complex anomalous phenomena in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon continue. The authorities are intensifying observations to identify the conditions for occurrence and elucidate the mechanism of the phenomena. However, the instability of the collected crystals, the intermittent loss of observational data, and the absence of a unifying theory for all events keep this incident unresolved.

Witness Testimony
Witness A (Tourist boat crew member)I was resting on the deck when suddenly a strong blue light emerged from beneath the water. It was like a giant underwater creature breathing. The light lasted for several minutes, and at the same time, I heard a deep, resonating sound. It was an unforgettable sight.
Witness B (Local Fisherman)There have always been strange stories about this lake. Especially to be careful on full moon nights. I had never seen the light, but a few years ago, while fishing, a low, groaning vibration suddenly came from the bottom of the boat. I pulled up the net but found nothing, so I stopped fishing that night. That was no natural sound.
Investigator C (Underwater Drone Operator)When I confirmed the crystals in that specific spot on the lakebed, I was astonished. Their structure was completely different from any known mineral. But when we tried to collect them, they rapidly changed, as if escaping us, reverting to their original water or rock. It was extremely difficult to retrieve them.
Kyu's Analysis
Complex phenomena occur simultaneously. The correlation of each event, especially the mechanism of crystal formation and disappearance, remains unexplained. Continuous monitoring and additional investigation are essential.
