During the 2020–2022 renovation period at Dōgo Onsen Honkan in Matsuyama, Ehime — one of Japan's oldest hot spring facilities — five workers and staff members independently reported seeing the reflection of an elderly woman in white kimono in the bathhouse mirrors. No one was present when they turned around. Optical investigation confirmed that the aged mirrors contained surface deterioration capable of producing illusory shapes, but could not account for the consistent specific description shared across independent witnesses.
Details
Dōgo Onsen Honkan, rebuilt in 1894, is a three-story wooden structure and one of Japan's oldest-documented hot spring facilities. A major renovation begun in 2019 (completion scheduled 2024) restricted access to the building; during this period only construction workers and limited management staff could enter.
In August 2020, a carpenter in his fifties working in the old second-floor bathhouse looked up from his work and saw in the mirror an elderly woman in white kimono standing behind him, hunched at the waist. He turned; no one was there. He looked back at the mirror; the figure was still reflected. He rubbed his eyes; when he looked again, it was gone. Within two weeks, three other construction workers in the same bathroom reported the same experience — each independently describing an "elderly woman."
A management staff member in her thirties reported a similar experience in March 2021 while cleaning. "While I was polishing the mirror, I saw a human shadow behind me. I turned — no one. I looked back at the mirror — it was still there. I turned again — gone."
Optical investigation found that some mirrors in the bathhouse dated to the Meiji era and showed irregular deterioration of the silver backing — conditions that can produce silhouette-like shapes under certain lighting angles. A specialist noted that aged mirrors with uneven deterioration "can produce figure-like illusions under specific light conditions."
However, the consistent specific description — white kimono, stooped elderly woman — shared independently by five witnesses at different times is not readily accounted for by random optical artifacts, which would be expected to produce different apparent shapes for each viewer. Dōgo Onsen's grounds include the sacred Tamanoishi stone, around which a tradition of spiritual encounter spanning more than a millennium has accumulated.
