Summary

Beginning in 2012 — the year after the Great East Japan Earthquake — fishermen working the Sanriku offshore waters in Iwate Prefecture reported an increase in sightings of large luminous spheres in the deep water beneath their vessels. Seven reports were filed between 2012 and 2015; two involved fishing nets with directional damage inconsistent with biological contact. The post-earthquake alteration of the seabed in the area has been proposed as a contributing factor, possibly involving geothermal discharge from new fault fissures.

Details

The Sanriku coast, a rias coastline across Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures, is among Japan's most productive fishing grounds. The March 11, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami caused catastrophic damage and significantly altered the seabed topography in multiple zones. Reports of deep-sea luminous objects from Sanriku fishermen began increasing from 2012.

The first report, in July 2012, came from a fishing vessel working longlines in waters approximately 300–400 meters deep off Miyako. During the retrieval of the longline gear, crew observed a large blue-white luminous sphere ascending from below the reach of their underwater lights. It approached the vessel's underside, moved horizontally, then descended rapidly and disappeared. The hull was found to have minor indentation; collision was investigated but not confirmed.

Seven similar reports from different Sanriku fishermen were recorded between 2012 and 2015. In two cases, retrieved fishing nets showed damage consistent with a strong unidirectional force — as if something had pulled from one side. Damage pattern analysis by a specialist determined the pattern was inconsistent with known avoidance behavior of squid, whales, or other large marine organisms.

A marine scientist cross-referencing post-earthquake seabed topography data found zones of 2–3 meter uplift and subsidence, with confirmed crust fissuring in the area. Hydrothermal venting from crust fissures and the aggregation of bioluminescent deep-sea organisms around thermal vents were proposed as possible contributors. A mechanism producing a coherent sphere 2–5 meters in diameter from these sources has not been established.

Report frequency declined after 2016, possibly correlated with progressive seabed stabilization.

Witness Testimony

Fisherman (male, 50s, off Miyako)"A large mass of light came up from the deep. Blue-white, maybe two to three meters across. It came to just under the hull, moved sideways, and sank back down. Strange things have been increasing since the earthquake."
Fishery cooperative member (male, 40s)"When I hauled the net in, one side was torn in an unusual shape. Not the pattern of a shark or a whale. Something below the surface had pulled from one direction. That area has been different since the quake."
Marine researcher (male, 50s)"The earthquake moved the seabed. Areas with new fault fissures can have hydrothermal venting. Bioluminescent organisms may aggregate around that warmth. But a coherent sphere of several meters — that I cannot yet explain."

Kyu's Analysis

The earthquake changed the seabed. Light spheres rose from the changed seabed. The earth's wounds may still be leaking light.
