The Luminous Rings over Lake Hamana
Summary
Between January and March 2023, eleven reports reached the Bureau describing ring-shaped luminous objects hovering 1–3 meters above the surface of Lake Hamana in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka. Witnessed diameters ranged from 5 to 20 meters across reports. The rings were hollow at center and vanished either by expanding and fading or by contracting inward. All sightings occurred in the pre-dawn to early-morning hours. Meteorological analysis correlated three of the eleven cases with specific atmospheric inversion and water vapor conditions; the remaining eight cases showed no comparable atmospheric anomaly.
Details
Lake Hamana is a brackish lake in western Shizuoka Prefecture, crossed by the Tōkaidō Shinkansen. Its winter mornings are prone to fog and atmospheric optical phenomena. The eleven reports that reached the Bureau were clustered between January 9 and the last week of March 2023.
The first report was filed by an elderly man walking the lake's shore at around 5:00 a.m. on January 9. He observed an orange ring approximately 5–8 meters in diameter hovering 1–2 meters above the water surface. The ring's interior was dark — no light emanated from the center. After remaining stationary for approximately three minutes, it expanded softly and disappeared. He attempted to photograph it with his phone but reported that the light was too faint to register on camera.
Four February reports followed, all in the pre-dawn and post-sunrise window. Colors ranged from orange to white. One witness described two rings appearing side by side; another reported a ring that "contracted" into nothing. A night fisherman who had been on the water since before midnight stated: "There was absolutely no sound. Even in the fog the light was clear. It was not a drone. It was circular."
A meteorological specialist reviewed weather data from the region for the relevant period. Three of the eleven sighting dates coincided with documented thermal inversion layers and elevated evaporative water vapor from the lake surface — conditions theoretically associated with plasma luminescence and ball lightning in certain research literature. However, a stable, ring-shaped luminous object 5–20 meters across is not predicted by existing theory. The eight remaining cases showed no comparable atmospheric anomaly in the data.
Two additional sightings were recorded in early 2024 when monitoring instruments were placed at the lakeshore. Both again occurred in pre-dawn hours in January.
