Summary
On July 28, 2023, more than forty independent reports reached the Bureau describing a V-shaped formation of five to seven luminous objects moving silently over the Daisetsuzan mountain range and the city of Asahikawa in Hokkaido. The formation maintained its shape for over ten minutes before disappearing into cloud cover. Asahikawa Airport Control and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force confirmed no registered aircraft in the relevant airspace. Radar records showed no corresponding returns.
Details
At 19:03 on July 28, 2023, five climbers descending from Asahidake (2,291 m) in the Daisetsuzan range spotted a cluster of light points overhead. The lights — shifting between orange and white — maintained a V-shaped formation at equal spacing as they moved southeast. There was no sound. Speed was far below that of commercial aircraft but well above typical drone velocity. The group observed the formation for over ten minutes and recorded fourteen photographs and two video clips.
Simultaneously, multiple residents of Asahikawa city filed independent reports. One described watching seven distinct light points in which the leading light changed direction and the remaining points adjusted in unison — "like a rehearsed maneuver." Bureau analysis of timestamps and observer locations confirmed that the formation moved from northwest of Asahikawa to the southeast, consistent across multiple triangulated sighting points.
Asahikawa Airport Control Center confirmed no authorized civilian aircraft, helicopters, or drones were registered for that airspace and time. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force's 2nd Air Wing at Chitose Air Base confirmed the formation did not correspond to any Self-Defense Force aircraft. The Chitose radar record showed no returns matching the reported location and time.
A cross-check with the Japan Meteorological Agency's radiosonde (high-altitude weather balloon) deployment found only one balloon in operation that night — inconsistent with the multiple-light, formation-shape description. Optical reflection hypotheses were considered but could not be established given the meteorological conditions at sunset with thin cloud cover present.
The Daisetsuzan region has accumulated roughly a dozen similar reports since the 2010s in local aviation enthusiast databases. No prior event generated forty or more simultaneous independent reports. The Bureau records this as unresolved.
