The Time Displacement Zone Near Mount Fuji's Summit
Summary
In August 2022, three separate groups of climbers who had spent time near the summit of Mount Fuji descended to find their timepieces — including radio-synchronized clocks, smartphones, and mechanical watches — all running ahead of standard time by four to seven minutes. Within each group, all devices showed the same deviation regardless of type; the deviations differed between groups. GPS track logs also showed discrepancies between recorded and perceived duration at the summit. Gravitational time dilation cannot account for discrepancies of this magnitude.
Details
On August 11, 2022, six members of Climbing Group A compared their timepieces at a rest station after descending from the summit of Mount Fuji (Kengamine, 3,776 m). Every device — a radio-synchronized clock, two smartphones, a mechanical wristwatch, and a quartz watch — showed the same reading: 4 minutes and 17 seconds ahead of the reference time broadcast by the national time signal. Smartphones, which normally auto-correct upon regaining a cell signal, retained the deviation even after reconnecting.
Group B, four climbers with no connection to Group A, reported a deviation of 6 minutes 44 seconds. Group C reported 4 minutes and 3 seconds. All three groups had traversed the crater rim (Ohachimeguri) near Kengamine and reported that the discrepancy appeared most pronounced in that area. The groups set out at different times and had no contact with one another.
Gravitational time dilation — the slowing of time in weaker gravitational fields — is a confirmed physical phenomenon. At 3,776 meters, gravitational acceleration is approximately 0.1% weaker than at sea level, causing clocks to run marginally faster. However, the calculated effect over an 8–12 hour period is on the order of 0.02 microseconds — several million times smaller than the observed deviations. Existing physics cannot account for the recorded magnitudes.
GPS track logs submitted by Group A showed a 28-minute discrepancy between the logged summit dwell time (62 minutes) and the group's perceived experience (approximately 90 minutes). Equipment malfunction is possible, but similar discrepancies were reported by other groups without prior coordination.
A meteorologist at the summit weather station noted that the electromagnetic environment near the peak is unusual, with lightning activity and solar flare effects more pronounced than at low altitude. A physicist consulted by the Bureau stated: "To account for a four-to-seven-minute deviation via gravitational time dilation would require gravitational field changes well beyond current cosmological understanding. An unknown factor cannot be fully excluded."
The Bureau plans to deploy measurement instruments during the August 2023 and 2024 climbing seasons.
