The following week, several households in the area reported nighttime screaming sounds, and one found its poultry killed overnight with unidentified fibers caught on the fence. Footprint casts taken by the Bureau did not match any known species in the region.
Details
Shortly after midnight on March 14, 2020, a couple who had driven to the abandoned road leading to the old Inunaki Tunnel encountered a creature standing in their headlights. It was covered in dark brown fur, moved in a forward-leaning posture, but walked unmistakably on two legs. Its eyes reflected yellow-green in the beam. It glanced toward the vehicle, then stepped into the cedar forest and was gone. The encounter lasted less than ten seconds, but both witnesses gave accounts that matched in specific detail.
The following day, footprints were found at the road's edge leading into the undergrowth. Bureau technicians made casts: approximately 28 centimeters long, 13 centimeters wide, five toes with the hallux splayed at an angle inconsistent with both bears and human bare feet. Asiatic black bears in the region leave broader, rounder tracks. Japanese macaques cannot sustain upright bipedal locomotion at the reported size. No match was found in regional wildlife records.
Over the same weekend, four households within a three-kilometer radius reported hearing high-pitched screaming at night — described by one as "like a pig being slaughtered." One family found its entire flock of ducks dead in a closed enclosure with no perimeter breach. Fibers caught on the fence were submitted for analysis: they did not match bear, boar, or deer.
The old Inunaki Tunnel has been a well-known "haunted" location since its closure in the early Shōwa period, and gained renewed attention following a 2019 horror film set in the area. Investigators confirmed that the two primary witnesses had not seen the film, and that the encounter occurred a full year after its release. The cultural context was noted but not treated as a causal factor.
A regional wildlife ecologist consulted by the Bureau stated: "There is no species in this area capable of sustained bipedal locomotion at that height. If the accounts are accurate, the possibility of an undocumented animal cannot be ruled out."
