Details
Around 14:37 on September 14, 2017, Mehmet Khan (pseudonym), who was grazing sheep in a northern valley of the Zagros Mountains, reported a sudden anomaly. While moving along his usual grazing route, he experienced the distant village appearing strangely elongated, and his entire field of vision seemed to waver. He testified that his own footsteps and the surrounding wind sounds abruptly vanished, leaving him with an eerie sensation of being in absolute silence.
In this region, ancient oral traditions spoke of "phantom valleys" and "places where time stands still." Records exist of travelers losing their sense of direction in specific spots, walking for an entire day only to return to the same location, or experiencing sudden deafness accompanied by a ringing in their ears. These traditions suggest that the current incident may not be an isolated phenomenon.
In recent years, similar reports have emerged from hikers and geological survey teams. Notably, on April 11, 2019, a geological survey team recorded their portable GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) devices temporarily losing signal at specific coordinates, concurrently with compasses exhibiting unstable behavior. They also reported that the surrounding rocks appeared to shimmer as if underwater.
Following these reports, authorities deployed observation equipment throughout this valley starting in June 2021, initiating a detailed investigation. During the phenomenon, the installed high-sensitivity microphones recorded absolutely no ambient sounds, indicating complete silence. Wide-angle cameras only captured abnormal light refraction and background distortions occurring at specific points.
Reports from investigators who entered the anomaly were even more perplexing. One investigator, who believed he had walked for only a few minutes within the core of the spatial distortion, found that contact with the external team was lost, and approximately three hours had actually passed. He testified to a sensation of time flowing significantly slower. External observations could not confirm the progression of time inside during this period.
During the occurrence of this phenomenon, observing the interior of the anomaly from the outside proved extremely difficult. The internal landscape suffered from distorted perspective, and light refraction made identification almost impossible. Conversely, when observing the exterior from within, the surrounding scenery appeared to undulate and distort, and no calls or radio communications from outside reached the interior. This suggests a change in the very properties of space, rather than a physical barrier.
This spatial anomaly occurs in irregular cycles, not limited to specific weather conditions or times of day. To date, no clues have been found to unravel the mechanism of this spatial distortion. Authorities have designated this area as a "monitoring and research zone" and are proceeding with further analysis of the phenomenon's recurrence conditions and physical effects.
