Summary

Inexplicable phenomena are periodically reported around the 'Tree of Forgetfulness' in Ouidah, Benin, West Africa. Vague yet distinct human-like residual images are observed at night, accompanied by an anomalous localized temperature drop in the surrounding environment, confirmed by multiple witnesses. Electronic devices, particularly audio recorders, capture noisy sounds resembling distressed moans and the rattling of chains, yet these are not human voices. The area has historical ties to the transatlantic slave trade, and local residents associate the phenomena with this tragic past, viewing it with apprehension. The Authority continues to monitor this unexplained case.

Details

On the night of April 13, 2021, a local guide leading tourists to the historic 'Tree of Forgetfulness' in Ouidah unexpectedly encountered an unusual cold spot and a vague but distinct upright, human-like shadow at the base of the tree. A tourist in the group attempted to photograph the sight with their mobile phone, but reported that the shutter would not activate. This incident prompted the initial report to the Authority.

Multiple similar reports exist. Particularly at night and under specific weather conditions, visitors and researchers have consistently reported anomalous phenomena. Local residents have long held the tree as both sacred and an object of apprehension. A legend persists among them that enslaved people were made to circle this tree to forget their homeland, linking the phenomena to this tragic historical narrative.

In August 2022, an initial investigation team from the Authority was dispatched to the site. The team deployed thermometers extensively, recording an inexplicable localized cooling of approximately 10°C below ambient temperature at specific points. Simultaneously, a wide-band microphone array captured irregular acoustic patterns resembling low moans and the scraping of metal. However, no physical source for these sounds was visually identified, and no physical evidence was found.

Subsequent analysis by acoustic experts revealed that the recorded sounds contained infrasound components beyond the range of human hearing. The patterns differed distinctly from natural sounds, and no artificial source could be identified. Furthermore, discontinuities were found in the data recorded at specific times, with some sections replaced by unintelligible noise. This anomaly cannot be explained solely by equipment malfunction or external interference.

Geological anomalies and localized electromagnetic disturbances were also thoroughly investigated, but no clear physical factors inducing the phenomena were found. While multiple eyewitness accounts show consistency in the general description of the phenomena, scientific reproducibility remains a challenge. Historical records indicate that the site where the tree stands was recognized as a 'gathering place for souls' or a 'boundary land' since ancient times.

Monitoring of the area around the 'Tree of Forgetfulness' continues. The anomalous phenomena persist intermittently, and their inducing conditions and mechanisms remain unknown. The Authority classifies this case as 'unexplained,' not excluding the possibility that it represents an inexplicable residual manifestation of past history, and considers it a subject for long-term investigation.

Timeline

  1. 17th-19th CenturiesPeak of the slave trade in Ouidah. The legend of the 'Tree of Forgetfulness' formed.
  2. April 13, 2021First clear sighting of a human-like manifestation and cold spot reported by a local guide.
  3. August 2022Initial Authority investigation. Recorded localized temperature drops and inexplicable acoustics.

Witness Testimony

Witness A (Local Guide)There was something like a person, vague but standing, at the base of the tree. It was a chilly night, but that spot was unusually cold. The tourist's phone wouldn't take a picture, and everyone was trembling.
Witness B (Tourist)I heard a low, moaning sound. I think there was also a sound like chains dragging. A strange smell of salt wafted through the air, and when I thought of the people put on ships, I was paralyzed with fear.
Investigator C (Authority Record)The thermometers recorded values distinctly different from the ambient environment. The audio data contained indistinct sounds with no identifiable physical source, and some data was missing. This cannot be explained by equipment malfunction.

Kyu's Analysis

This case indicates the possibility that tragic historical memories have solidified into physical phenomena. The human-like manifestation, temperature drop, and acoustic recordings cannot be explained as mere hallucinations. The Authority prioritizes identifying the recurrence conditions and energy source of this event.
