In the early hours of April 12, 2022, a major subterranean vibration occurred near Mfuwe village, located in the southern part of Zambia's Luangwa Valley. The vibration lasted for several minutes, causing distress among residents. Days later, similar phenomena were reported successively at multiple locations within the valley, prompting local government agencies to initiate an initial investigation. An expert team from the authorities arrived on site to ascertain the cause of the vibrations and collect testimonies from residents.
The first substantive investigation confirmed new fissures, reaching up to 50 centimeters in width, in the ground at specific points. The soil around these fissures exhibited unusual viscosity and localized high acidity. Furthermore, an intense, unidentified odor persisted over a radius of several hundred meters, a complex smell resembling a mixture of decaying animal organic matter and chemical solvents. This odor was notably more pronounced during vibration occurrences.
Multiple villagers testified to witnessing a gigantic black creature emerging from the ground during nighttime subterranean vibrations. According to their descriptions, the creature had a body over 1 meter in diameter and an estimated length of more than ten meters. Its exterior was covered in scales and possessed a sheen. Detailed observation was extremely difficult as it vanished back into the ground instantaneously. Some testimonies also reported hearing a low, growling sound emitted by the creature.
Cross-referencing historical records revealed the existence of an ancient legend in the Luangwa Valley concerning a colossal subterranean serpent called "Nkolowembe." The Nkolowembe is said to move freely underground and cause earthquakes. The current sightings and phenomena presented striking consistencies with this regional folklore. Authorities are now considering the possibility that the tradition is not merely a myth and have deepened their investigation.
Detailed geological surveys identified multiple unnatural cavities ranging from several meters to tens of meters underground at the vibration sites. Unlike naturally formed structures, some of these cavities showed traces indicative of a biological entity's passage. Additionally, trace amounts of an unknown organic substance were detected within the cavities, exhibiting properties distinct from known biological materials.
