Case No. #1357
Case of Periodic Chromatic Anomaly of Rocks and Vegetation, Accompanied by Localized Mass Fluctuations and Ultrasonic Emissions in Dornogovi Province, Mongolia
Summary
Since July 2023, periodic chromatic anomalies of rocks and arid vegetation have been reported in a specific area of the Gobi Desert in Dornogovi Province, southeastern Mongolia. This phenomenon exhibits vibrant color shifts inexplicable by conventional geological or biological processes, concurrently with transient fluctuations in nearby object mass and the emission of ultrasonic frequencies beyond human hearing. Despite multiple on-site investigations by authorities, the mechanism and periodicity of the phenomenon remain unknown, preventing a definitive explanation of its root cause. This case suggests the involvement of an unknown agency that transcends established physical laws.
Details
On July 12, 2023, nomadic herders near Bayan-Dalan in Dornogovi Province reported that specific rock formations "change color at night and revert to normal by day." This phenomenon closely resembles the local legend of "Weeping Stones," passed down for centuries. Authorities, noting that periodic satellite monitoring of the area had previously detected transient spectral anomalies, escalated the investigation.
Initial field observations documented that the affected rocks and surrounding arid shrubs would transform into unnaturally vibrant hues of blue, red, and purple from dusk through midnight. This chromatic shift typically lasted for several hours, reverting to their original dull sandy color at sunrise. The intensity of the color change was non-uniform, and the specific colors varied across occurrences.
Automated sensors deployed by the authorities recorded localized temperature anomalies, with ambient air temperatures fluctuating by up to 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit) during the color changes. Furthermore, a high-sensitivity microphone array detected ultrasonic frequencies (25kHz to 40kHz) occurring periodically in specific bands, inaudible to humans. These ultrasonic emissions tended to synchronize with the onset and cessation of the chromatic phenomenon.
Notably, high-precision mass spectrometers placed in the target area captured transient fluctuations in the mass of specific rocks, ranging from 0.5% to 1.5% during the color transformation. These mass fluctuations were unpredictable and not confined to any particular rock. Analysis of samples from the discolored rocks and soil revealed no anomalies in known chemical compositions, leaving the physical basis of the phenomenon unexplained.
Interviews with local residents revealed that while the phenomenon is regarded by some as a "sacred omen," others perceive it as an "inauspicious sign." Some herders testified that on nights when the colors were particularly vibrant, animals became unusually quiet, and the wind ceased entirely. This suggests the phenomenon is not merely a visual alteration but potentially impacts a broader environmental sphere.
Authorities are currently establishing an expanded sensor network to identify the periodicity of the phenomenon. Investigations are proceeding without excluding any possibilities, including meteorological conditions, subterranean micro-seismic activity, celestial alignments, or unknown energy fields. However, no method to artificially induce or suppress the phenomenon has been discovered, and its appearance remains unpredictable.

Witness Testimony
Herder AAt night, that rock glows blue as if alive. The wind stops, and it just shines silently. My grandfather also spoke of such things.
Herder BAt first, I couldn't believe my eyes. I've never seen rocks turn red or purple. The animals also seem restless. Is it a sign of something bad to come?
Investigator C (anonymous)Our instruments detected an incredible amount of static electricity when the rocks changed color. There was a faint tingling sensation upon touch.
Kyu's Analysis
A complex phenomenon inexplicable by known physical laws. Simultaneous fluctuations of multiple physical quantities are highly unusual. Continued monitoring is imperative.
