On April 13, 2021, around 10:00 PM, a geological survey team camping in an unnamed dune approximately 150 km southwest of Douz, Southern Tunisia, made the initial report. They witnessed the sand particles on the ground emitting a faint, pale blue light. Initial reports suggested possibilities such as phosphorescence or bioluminescence, but subsequent investigations disproved these.
The survey team observed the same phenomenon the following night. The luminescence was most prominent from sunset to dawn, tending to intensify on moonless nights.
