Case No. #1286
Incident of Periodic Unknown Chanting, Localized Cold, and Anomalous Discoloration of Religious Paintings at Vardzia Cave Monastery Complex, Georgia
Summary
In the early hours of July 12, 2023, deep chanting was periodically reported from the Vardzia Cave Monastery Complex in southern Georgia. The sound source remained unidentified, while localized cold zones were simultaneously detected in multiple areas. The Bureau's investigation revealed incomplete audio recordings and unexplainable color changes in religious paintings, yet the origin of the phenomena remains unclarified. This anomaly is linked to the monastery's tragic history, whispered about for centuries.
Details
At 3:17 AM on July 12, 2023, a night patrol officer at the Vardzia Cave Monastery Complex heard an unknown, chant-like singing emanating from near the main chapel. The voices sounded like multiple men, and the officer simultaneously felt an extreme cold in parts of the passageway. The officer immediately reported the situation, which prompted the Bureau's intervention.
Several other patrol officers and past visitors have also reported hearing similar chants. These occurrences are particularly notable at night or in the early morning and tend to occur in specific chapels or former monastic cells. The monastery, built in the 12th century, has a history of repeated invasions and earthquakes. Records indicate many monks lost their lives there, and local legend suggests their spirits continue to sing.
The Bureau installed automated audio recorders, thermal cameras, and electromagnetic field sensors in multiple locations. Weeks of monitoring after installation captured faint, chant-like sounds on several occasions. However, these sounds were often obscured by noise, preventing clear analysis. Thermal imaging data from the same period showed anomalous cold spots, up to 8°C below the ambient environment, but these tended to disappear quickly.
Notably, anomalous color changes were detected in some of the frescoes painted in the main sanctuary. Specifically, the pigment on the Virgin Mary's face would subtly increase in blueness, or the redness of her garments would deepen, recorded to occur synchronously with the sound and cold phenomena. Expert analysis concluded that these changes were not due to humidity, light degradation, or microorganisms. No chemical changes in the pigments were confirmed.
One night, when chanting was recorded deep within the Church of the Dormition, a high-sensitivity camera captured a faint “ripple” on the surface of a fresco. It was not a physical vibration but closer to a visual distortion. However, this footage was obscured by noise after a few seconds, and no similar phenomenon has been recorded since.
These events are difficult to explain by a single natural phenomenon. Acoustic, thermal, and visual anomalies occur in combination, and their reproducibility is uncertain. The color changes and “ripples” in the frescoes, in particular, suggest unknown interference.
The Bureau continues remote surveillance. This phenomenon, deeply intertwined with the monastery's extensive history, possesses characteristics that transcend our understanding.

Witness Testimony
Witness A (Night Patrol Officer)It was my usual patrol. In the silent monastery, suddenly, I heard deep men's voices singing. It sounded like an ancient hymn, but I couldn't tell where it was coming from. I also felt an abnormal cold that chilled me to the bone.
Witness B (Tourist)As I walked, listening to the guide, the air in one room suddenly felt heavy. And I thought I heard a prayer-like voice from afar. I got goosebumps and immediately wanted to leave that place.
Witness C (History Researcher)I've researched the history of this monastery for many years, but there are days when certain frescoes look strange. Especially the face of the Virgin Mary; I felt it subtly changed expression. It wasn't the play of light. Something is influencing it.
Kyu's Analysis
An unexplainable complex phenomenon. Acoustic, thermal, and material changes are linked. Continuous observation is essential.
