Case No. #1227
Periodic Spatial Perception Distortion, Acoustic Propagation Anomaly, and Optical Displacement Incident in Elqui Valley, Chile
Summary
In the early hours of September 12, 2017, a resident herding sheep in the mountainous region of Elqui Valley, Coquimbo Region, Chile, reported a sudden sensation of the surrounding space contracting and expanding, alongside distant sounds appearing abnormally close. Since then, similar reports have occurred sporadically in the area, including visual anomalies of distorted night skies and electronic equipment malfunctions. The Bureau's initial investigation observed localized gravitational fluctuations and anomalous light refraction, but no clear cause has been identified. This incident represents a highly peculiar phenomenon involving a complex combination of spatial, auditory, and visual abnormalities inexplicable by known physical laws.
Details
At approximately 01:30 on September 12, 2017, Mr. E. Valenzuela (then in his 50s), who was herding sheep at the foot of Cerro Tololo in a remote part of Elqui Valley, suddenly experienced the ground beneath him receding several meters, while the sound of a distant stream echoed as if right next to his ear. He also testified to simultaneous visual anomalies where stars in the night sky subtly wavered, expanding and contracting. The phenomenon lasted several minutes, causing him intense fear.
In the following months, similar reports surfaced from other residents of Elqui Valley. Notably, amateur astronomers, who frequently observe in this region known for its clear skies, recorded multiple instances of star images irregularly shifting and deforming within their telescope fields of view. Initial inquiries by the Bureau revealed local legends of 'Valleys of Shadow' and 'Lost Places' suggesting spatial anomalies, with tales of travelers losing their sense of direction and familiar paths during certain periods. These reports indicate that Mr. Valenzuela's experience was not an isolated incident.
The Bureau dispatched a team of specialists in March 2018, deploying high-performance laser rangefinders, acoustic analysis devices, gravimeters, and wide-area electromagnetic scanners. Initial data analysis revealed subtle fluctuations in distance measurements, anomalous attenuation and amplification of sound waves in specific frequency bands, and localized gravitational field variations within the affected area during the phenomenon. However, these physical phenomena exhibited irregular patterns inconsistent with known meteorological conditions or geological activity.
Due to the short duration and transient nature of the phenomenon, comprehensive data acquisition proved challenging. Some observation equipment also reported temporary malfunctions or corrupted data recordings during the incidents. Subjective reports from multiple witnesses, such as 'time felt slower' or 'I seemed to shrink,' did not always align with objective measurements. However, the fact that separate observers at multiple locations simultaneously experienced similar visual and auditory anomalies prevents dismissing them as mere illusions.
The Bureau conducted continuous surveillance to ascertain the phenomenon's reproducibility but could not identify specific triggers or occurrence conditions. Predictive intervention was deemed impossible. Currently, reports of spatial perception distortion, acoustic anomalies, and optical displacement continue to occur irregularly in parts of Elqui Valley. These phenomena are recorded as complex spatial variations unexplainable by existing scientific frameworks.
The Bureau continues to operate remote monitoring systems to investigate the long-term patterns and potential impacts of the phenomenon. The possibility that unidentified factors are influencing the spatial structure of this region cannot be ruled out. We recognize this as an extremely critical incident.

Witness Testimony
Witness E. ValenzuelaI was watching my sheep when suddenly the ground seemed to recede. The sound of the stream was right there, but it was actually quite far away. The stars in the sky were wobbly. It was like the fabric of the world had torn.
Amateur Astronomer AWhile observing the Milky Way through my telescope, the stars in the field of view slowly deformed into an oval shape for several seconds, then returned to their original form. I thought it was a lens anomaly, but I could see the stars wavering with my naked eye too. It reminded me of the 'invisible wall' stories I'd heard locally.
Kyu's Analysis
Complex spatial variations are inexplicable by current science. Continuous surveillance and a multidisciplinary approach are required. Resolving this incident is a top priority for the Bureau.
