Details
On July 19, 2017, geological survey personnel from the Geological Survey of Iran, working in the central Dasht-e Lut Desert, locally known as the 'Land of Fire,' reported experiencing visual anomalies where the surrounding landscape appeared inverted. Simultaneously, their GPS systems malfunctioned, and they felt as though several minutes of time had elapsed instantaneously. The team members reported severe tinnitus and headaches, remaining disoriented for several hours after the event.
Over the following years, other survey teams and a limited number of nomadic herders traversing the same region reported similar visual distortions, temporal disjunctions, and disorientation. Some accounts describe team members briefly losing consciousness and waking up several meters from their original position. Local legends of 'Desert Demons' or 'Mirage Curses' began to be associated with these incidents, though no concrete explanations emerged.
In response to these reports, authorities dispatched multiple detailed investigative teams. On April 12, 2021, during the installation of an automated observation station, three water tanks and two spare fuel cans suddenly disappeared from their staging area. A search immediately ensued, and the items were rediscovered approximately 500 meters away, with no records existing for the period of their disappearance and reappearance. During this incident, an amorphous luminous entity, moving silently at high altitude, was observed circling overhead by multiple team members.
Subsequently, further electronic equipment anomalies continued, including vehicle dash cameras failing to record footage during specific timeframes and digital clocks losing synchronization. On March 7, 2023, a visual anomaly occurred where an installed tent appeared 'transparent' for several minutes, simultaneously causing temporary functional failure of radios and satellite phones inside.
