Summary

On May 14, 2021, a fishing boat off Bulisa District, Lake Albert, Northwestern Uganda, reported anomalous heating of its fishing nets and severe vibrations in the hull. This aligns with persistent reports from local fishermen over several years concerning "heat from the lake bottom" and "drum-like sounds." Initial investigations by authorities detected an unidentified heat source from the lakebed and periodic ultra-low frequency sounds presumed to be biological in origin. This incident suggests the presence of an unconfirmed giant aquatic creature lurking in Lake Albert, its true nature remaining unexplained to this day.

Details

In the early hours of May 14, 2021, the fishing vessel "Enyoro" operating off Bulisa District in Lake Albert suddenly reported abnormal heat emanating from its deployed nets and intense vibrations throughout the hull. The captain immediately retrieved the nets, testifying that a section of the net had carbonized at a depth of approximately 30 meters, and the surrounding water temperature had risen sharply. This represents a clear instance of the unidentified phenomena frequently reported in this region.

For several decades, local fishermen have consistently reported high temperatures from the lake bottom and deep, "drum-like" low-frequency sounds resonating underwater in specific areas of the lake. They refer to this as "Ngoma ya Mbale" (Drum of Mbale) or "Spirit of the Lake," treating these areas as dangerous zones to be avoided. However, in recent years, these phenomena have begun to occur with increased frequency and across wider areas.

On March 8, 2022, the small fishing boat "Orienta," drifting due to engine failure in shallow waters north of Bulisa District, directly encountered the unidentified entity. A colossal shadow, estimated to be over 20 meters in length, passed beneath the vessel, possessing what appeared to be scales emitting a dull light and a huge, vertically split mouth. During this encounter, the Orienta's electronic equipment completely ceased functioning, and its engine became impossible to restart.

Subsequent investigations by authorities, utilizing deployed surveillance buoys and underwater sonar, repeatedly recorded periodic thermal zones and extremely powerful, biologically derived ultra-low frequency sounds in specific water bodies. Water temperatures momentarily reached over 35 degrees Celsius, and the simultaneously recorded acoustic patterns did not match any known aquatic life. However, visual confirmation or sample collection efforts have thus far been unsuccessful.

This phenomenon differs from mere hydrothermal venting. Temporary localized drops in ambient oxygen concentration and abnormal behavior of aquatic organisms have also been observed in the vicinity. Certain satellite images captured transient signs of a massive, swirling disturbance on the lake surface, which quickly dissipated. These observations suggest an unidentified entity affecting not only heat and sound but also the surrounding environment.

To date, the true identity of this giant aquatic creature remains unresolved. Based on the periodicity, wide distribution of the phenomena, and the consistency of witness testimonies, the Bureau does not consider this a mere natural occurrence or misidentification. Surveillance efforts continue, aiming for a complete understanding of its ecology and behavioral patterns.

Witness Testimony

Amin Okwero, Captain of Fishing Vessel "Enyoro" (50s)The net was so hot it almost burned my hands the moment it touched. The whole boat vibrated, as if something huge was pounding the hull. I knew it was the wrath of Ngoma ya Mbale.
Marko Uceni, Crewmember of Fishing Vessel "Orienta" (30s)The engine stopped, and I was trembling with fear. The shadow that emerged from beneath the boat was like a colossal snake. I will never forget those eyes, glowing with a dull light.
Anonymous Fisherman (60s)That story has been around forever. I thought it was just a tale, but it's not anymore. The lake is angry. We have provoked it.

Kyu's Analysis
