Case No. #1112
Gobi Desert, Incident of Stagnant Obsidian Structure and Sand Vortex
Summary
On the night of July 15, 2023, multiple nomadic herders in the northern Gobi Desert, Mongolia, witnessed an obsidian-black structure hovering silently in the night sky. This object, estimated at 50 meters in diameter, completely absorbed ambient light and generated a peculiar sand vortex directly beneath it. It vanished instantaneously after approximately 15 minutes. Authority investigations recorded unexplained magnetic field anomalies and unusual sand displacement at the site, along with electronic device malfunctions in survey vehicles. The phenomenon remains unexplained by any known natural or aerial activity.
Details
On the night of July 15, 2023, in the northern Gobi Desert, approximately 50 kilometers from the Kharaaguun Valley, multiple nomadic herders reported observing a perfectly black, stationary structure in the night sky. This object, estimated to be about 50 meters in diameter, appeared to absorb all ambient light, reflecting neither starlight nor moonlight. It emitted no sound, and directly beneath it, an unnatural vortex of sand was observed swirling upwards into the sky. This anomalous sight persisted for approximately 15 minutes before the object instantly dissolved into the darkness and disappeared.
The herders testified that the object, while resembling a 'shadow' with no distinct features, was perceived as a 'mass' with clear boundaries. Multiple witnesses reported that the ambient temperature rose by approximately 5 degrees Celsius during the event, and a faint, ionized odor permeated the air. This information suggests significant environmental changes during the object's appearance, a phenomenon inexplicable by their traditional knowledge.
The Authority has, over several decades, collected numerous fragmented testimonies of similar unidentified aerial phenomena from across the vast Gobi Desert. However, most of these remained distant sightings, without leading to the recovery of concrete physical evidence. The 2023 incident stands out among past records due to its peculiar morphology, the relatively detailed multiple testimonies, and the observed sand vortex and electronic interference directly beneath the object.
Upon receiving the report, the Authority's investigation team immediately dispatched to the site. Although the obsidian structure had already vanished upon their arrival, localized sand displacement patterns spanning approximately 100 meters in radius and an unexplained magnetic field anomaly were recorded. Traces of sand pushed in unusual directions were observed, yet there were no footprints or vehicle tracks in the vicinity. This suggests the object did not physically contact the ground but exerted a powerful force.
The electronic equipment of the investigation vehicles experienced brief malfunctions, with several measurement devices temporarily displaying errors. Specifically, multiple instances of complete paralysis of GPS and communication systems were recorded. This electronic anomaly perfectly coincided with the timeframe of the object's sighting. Analysis of sand samples collected from the site revealed trace amounts of metallic particles with compositions not typically found in the natural environment, though a direct correlation to the object cannot be definitively stated.
Interviews with local residents brought forth the ancient legend of the 'Night Sand God' prevalent in this region. According to the legend, a black mass occasionally appears in the night sky, causing sandstorms and altering the spirit of the land. This legend shows a peculiar congruence with the incident's eyewitness accounts, though, of course, it lacks any scientific basis. Nevertheless, the possibility that cultural background influenced witness testimonies cannot be entirely dismissed.
I, along with the Authority, have examined this incident from multiple angles. The phenomenon does not correspond to any known aircraft, meteorological event, or natural occurrence. The possibility of desert mirages or optical illusions was also considered, but the consistency of multiple testimonies and objective data from electronic device anomalies negate such explanations.
What nature this obsidian structure possesses, and what purpose it had in appearing, remains completely unexplained at present. Monitoring the vast expanse of the Gobi Desert is extremely difficult. The Authority designates this incident as a top-priority surveillance target and maintains strict vigilance for similar recurrences. Unexplained. Record continuing.

Witness Testimony
Witness A (Nomad)It was darkness itself; it seemed to swallow the stars and the moon. There was no sound, only sand spiraling up to the heavens. I have never seen anything like it.
Witness B (Nomad)I felt a strange presence in the middle of the night and went outside. A black, shadow-like thing was hovering, and my neighbor's radio suddenly broke. My body felt cold, but the air was hot. It was deeply unsettling.
Kyu's Analysis
The incident remains unexplained. The Authority will continue surveillance.
