Case No. #1079
Rila Mountains, Case of the Abyssal Infrasound
Summary
Since September 12, 2019, an unexplained infrasound has been intermittently detected in the high altitudes of Bulgaria's Rila Mountains. While largely imperceptible to human ears, this sound is recorded by specific equipment and induces abnormal behavior in local wildlife. Authorities continue their investigation to identify the source and mechanisms of the phenomenon, yet no clear leads have emerged. The sound, emanating from deep within the mountains, suggests a possibility of a supernatural occurrence.
Details
On September 12, 2019, a wildlife surveillance camera placed in the northwestern Rila Mountains fortuitously recorded an anomalous frequency sound. The sound, an infrasound below the human audible range, coincided with footage showing surrounding animals exhibiting sudden rigidity and disorientation. This was initially dismissed as equipment malfunction by the researcher who installed it.
However, similar phenomena were subsequently reported multiple times at different locations. On October 1, 2019, a group of mountaineers reported inexplicable physical discomfort and an unusual sense of pressure in the mountains. They testified to hearing a ringing sensation in their ears while simultaneously witnessing local wildlife fleeing en masse. In response to these reports, the authorities dispatched a specialized acoustic investigation team to the site. Local legends contain references to nights when the mountain "sings its lament."
The investigation team installed high-sensitivity microphones and seismographs, successfully recording the infrasound. The sound pulsed at specific intervals, with frequencies consistently below 15 Hz. However, pinpointing the source proved exceptionally difficult. Directional microphones suggested the source was deep underground, yet geological surveys revealed no new faults or large cavities. Furthermore, during sound occurrences, subtle disruptions in GPS signals caused temporary malfunctions in measurement equipment. This sound exhibited patterns distinct from known seismic tremors, which are natural phenomena.
Analysis of the sound waves revealed no characteristics consistent with known natural phenomena or artificial sources. Although the sound pressure was below the typical human sensory threshold, its effects on certain organisms and the human body were implied. Soil samples from the surrounding area showed no unusual particulates or fluctuations in radiation levels, ruling out chemical factors. Some investigators suggested a possible correlation between the sound's occurrence and specific weather conditions, particularly high-altitude fog, but no clear correlation has been established.
The authorities also investigated potential links to underground water veins and geothermal activity in the vicinity, but definitive evidence remained elusive. The recorded sound wave patterns, while possessing a certain periodicity, constantly fluctuated in intensity and exhibited unpredictable amplitudes. This irregularity further complicated the elucidation of the matter. It was also discovered that the sound was particularly strong near ancient religious ruins found deep within the mountain range. Wall paintings in these ruins mention "voices from the earth's depths" in ancient texts.
To this day, the sound emanating from the abyss of the Rila Mountains remains unknown in its origin and mechanism. Authorities have established an extensive observation network across the mountain range, conducting continuous monitoring. This case suggests the possibility of an unexplained natural phenomenon or the involvement of an unknown entity, making it one of the Authority's highest priority investigations. The sound from the abyss breaks the silence of the Rila Mountains and continues to question the existence of realities beyond our comprehension.

Witness Testimony
Witness A (Mountaineer)Near the summit, I suddenly felt a crushing sensation all over my body. A low rumble echoed in my ears, and at the same time, all the marmots around us fled into their burrows. It was an unusual terror.
Investigator B (Acoustic Analyst)The data clearly shows infrasound, but even with a stethoscope, no sound is audible. However, during sound events, subtle fluctuations were observed in surrounding hygrometers and geomagnetic sensors. This is highly unusual.
Local Resident C (Shepherd)The mountain has always groaned sometimes. Especially on foggy days, the sheep become restless. The old villagers say something from deep within the earth is breathing.
Kyuu's Analysis
The case has persisted for an extended period. The source remains unknown, but the mix of regularity and irregularity suggests it is not merely a geological phenomenon. Continued analysis is essential.
