Summary

On August 14, 2021, crew members of a research vessel navigating off the Kerguelen Islands in the Indian Ocean sighted a massive, unidentified creature moving beneath the surface. In an area shrouded by dense ice fog, a black, elongated shadow, estimated to be over 30 meters long, exhibited a form unlike any known marine life. Since then, multiple reports of irregular low-frequency acoustic patterns and similar eyewitness accounts have been recorded in the same region. Intensive investigations by the authorities have yielded no direct visual evidence, with frequent malfunctions of exploration equipment. Analysis of washed-up soft tissue is ongoing, but the true nature of this unknown lifeform remains unclassified.

Details

At 03:15 on August 14, 2021, crew members aboard the research vessel "La Vanguard," operated by the French National Centre for Scientific Research, sighted a massive, unidentified creature off the Kerguelen Islands in the Indian Ocean. In an area enveloped by dense ice fog, a black, elongated shadow, estimated to be over 30 meters in length, was observed moving at an unnatural speed approximately 5 meters beneath the surface, along the starboard side of the vessel. Its form differed from known marine organisms, being streamlined yet possessing several irregular bulges. The crew immediately activated radar and sonar, but no anomalous signals were detected.

Following this report, several similar testimonies have been recorded in the same sea area over the past few years. On March 7, 2019, an underwater acoustic sensor deployed by a German research team captured irregular low-frequency vibration patterns. These data were classified as having a mechanical resonance, distinct from whale vocalizations. On September 21, 2020, a fisherman on a small vessel witnessed a "giant snake-like creature" passing close to his boat. At the time, the fisherman dismissed it as a cold-induced hallucination, but after learning of "La Vanguard's" report, he submitted his testimony to the authorities. Further investigation by authorities revealed similar lore in Kerguelen indigenous oral records, referring to a "wandering shadow of the deep."

From April to June 2022, authorities dispatched a specialized research vessel equipped with a deep-sea submersible and high-performance sonar to conduct intensive tracking investigations. The sonar detected anomalous acoustic patterns on multiple occasions, which did not exist in any prior data. The sound source moved at approximately 15 knots per second, demonstrating an ability to ascend from depths of 500 meters to near the surface in short periods. However, each time the submersible approached, the target consistently vanished rapidly, yielding no direct visual information or high-resolution images. Furthermore, during this investigation period, several instances of unexplained short-term malfunctions in the submersible's power systems were reported, causing temporary shutdowns of some recording devices.

On January 5, 2023, a massive, previously unidentified type of soft tissue washed ashore on the southeastern coast of the Kerguelen Islands. This tissue, measuring approximately 4 meters in length, showed no genetic match to any known biological organism. Analysis indicated it possessed a unique cellular structure capable of withstanding extreme cold and high pressure, but information regarding the overall morphology and function of the creature remained elusive. Authorities are currently storing this tissue under strict security for further analysis.

Even now, similar acoustic responses continue to be detected intermittently in the waters surrounding the Kerguelen Islands. No specific pattern has been identified, and appearances remain unpredictable. Authorities have yet to definitively identify the nature of this unknown lifeform and continue to gather new information from incidental encounters. This incident remains unexplained and holds a high priority on the Bureau's monitoring list.

Deep-sea tracking investigations are extremely challenging, but authorities are considering the introduction of cutting-edge technology. The existence of an undiscovered giant creature has the potential to fundamentally alter our understanding of marine ecosystems. The investigation will not cease until the true nature of this shadow is elucidated.

Witness Testimony

La Vanguard Crew Member AIt was enormous. Black, moving with a strange grace. Not a whale. I've never seen anything like it.
Fisherman BLike a giant snake, but thicker, with lumps. It passed right under my boat. I thought I was dreaming, but it was real.
Special Survey Vessel Sonar Operator CThe patterns were erratic, yet deliberate. Too complex for simple echoes. Then the system glitched.

Kyuu's Analysis

This incident suggests the existence of an unknown deep-sea ecosystem. Continuous monitoring and data collection are essential.
