Case No. #1076
Altai Mountains, Incident of Localized Scorching and Thawing
Summary
At 2:17 PM on July 12, 2023, at an altitude of 2,800 meters in the Altai Mountains, an area with a radius of approximately 3 meters suddenly reached several hundred degrees Celsius. Despite the surrounding sub-zero temperatures, the ground instantly melted, and parts of the rock transformed into a glassy substance. This anomalous localized heating is highly peculiar due to the absence of any preceding signs or discernible source. The Authority does not rule out the involvement of an unknown energy source. To date, the mechanism behind this phenomenon remains unexplained.
Details
At 2:17 PM on July 12, 2023, a geological survey team encountered an inexplicable phenomenon in the northern part of the Ukok Plateau in the Altai Mountains, at an altitude of approximately 2,800 meters. While working in the surrounding frozen tundra, they reported that a circular area, roughly 3 meters in diameter, suddenly began emitting intense heat. The surface ice and snow instantly evaporated, and the exposed bedrock glowed red-hot, with some parts transforming into a black, vitrified material. The team recorded surface temperatures of up to 980°C with their portable thermal imaging camera, yet no flames, luminescence, or smoke, indicative of a heat source, were observed.
The phenomenon subsided in just 3 minutes, and the affected area rapidly cooled thereafter. However, the thermal alteration remained evident. The Authority reviewed past records and found several similar reports from the same region. In September 2008, local nomads testified that while herding livestock, steam suddenly rose from the ground, causing a flock of sheep to suffer from heatstroke. Furthermore, unreleased Soviet-era documents from the 1950s mention parts of the Altai Mountains as "areas of irregular high heat generation."
Following the incident, the Authority immediately dispatched an investigation team to the site. Analysis revealed trace amounts of elements in the soil, presumed to be of non-terrestrial origin, which are not typically found in the Altai Mountains. Moreover, the altered rock structures exhibited peculiar crystalline formations irreproducible by known terrestrial volcanic activity or artificial high-temperature processing. However, the mechanism of these anomalous substances' formation or how they generate extreme heat remains entirely unknown. Some of the investigation team's electronic devices experienced temporary malfunctions and data corruption during the phenomenon.
Analysis of past satellite and aerial imagery data indicated that similar surface changes had occurred sporadically around the incident site in the past. However, the intervals between these occurrences were irregular, and no clear correlation with specific seasonal or geological factors has been established. These thermal events consistently demonstrate abrupt onset, are highly localized without affecting the surrounding environment, and lack any identifiable cause.
Oral traditions in the region speak of tales where "the earth boils when mountain spirits become angry." This suggests a similarity beyond mere coincidence with the current phenomenon. The Authority does not dismiss the possibility that these traditions were attempts to explain similar past occurrences. However, no direct geographical match is found between the locations indicated in the traditions and the current incident sites.
The Authority continues to monitor the region for thermal anomalies by deploying remote surveillance systems. To date, no new large-scale heat generation has been recorded, but minor increases in ground surface temperature are detected irregularly. This phenomenon is likely caused by an energy source inexplicable by our laws of physics. Its true nature remains unknown.

Witness Testimony
Geological Survey Team Member ASuddenly, the snow at my feet evaporated, and the ground glowed red. There was no fire. Just a heatwave. My portable thermal imager instantly maxed out.
Local Nomad BIn 2008, my sheep suddenly started struggling. Heat was spewing from the ground. They say it's the work of mountain spirits.
Investigation Geologist CThe rock alteration is extraordinary. It differs from known geothermal activity or artificial heat sources. It can only be assumed that something released extreme energy instantaneously.
Kyuu's Analysis
Unexplained localized energy emission. This incident represents a unique phenomenon contradicting known physical laws, requiring continuous monitoring and data collection.
