Case No. #1584
Ethiopia, Afar Region: "Danakil Desert's Melting Light" Thermal Anomaly and Communication Blackout Incident
Summary
Since 2017, non-geometric luminous objects have been observed multiple times at night in Ethiopia's Afar Region, specifically in the Danakil Desert. These luminous phenomena generate extreme heat, enough to vitrify surface rocks, and simultaneously cause localized communication and GPS signal blackouts. The objects move silently and ultimately vanish without a trace. Authorities have not yet identified their physical nature or the mechanism of their appearance.
Details
On November 14, 2017, at 03:20, the first detailed report emerged from a geological survey camp in the Danakil Desert, describing a strange light appearing on the northeastern horizon. Several researchers visually confirmed a silent luminous object moving slowly horizontally. The light remained for several minutes before rapidly ascending and disappearing. Initially, this report was largely dismissed as a parhelion or a type of atmospheric phenomenon.
However, in the following months, similar accounts of “night spirits’ fire” were reported to authorities by local Afar nomads. They have long recounted that this light, appearing on specific nights, causes the land to become “sick.” In May 2018, satellite image analysis revealed multiple unnatural, glassy melt traces at specific locations in the Danakil Desert. These circular traces, approximately 5 meters in diameter, were inconsistent with known geothermal activity or lightning strikes.
To monitor recurrence, authorities deployed high-sensitivity cameras, thermal sensors, and electromagnetic wave detectors in the area with concentrated melt traces. On March 7, 2021, at 01:55, a luminous object reappeared while the monitoring system was active. Thermal sensors recorded surface temperatures reaching an instantaneous 1500°C, and nearby rocks began to melt. This temperature is sufficient for glass formation.
Simultaneously, surrounding radio communications and GPS signals were completely blacked out. However, critical footage from surveillance cameras during the phenomenon was heavily corrupted by noise, preventing clear identification of the object's shape. Electromagnetic wave detectors recorded anomalous high-frequency readings before the system froze and ceased functioning. GPS data also showed disrupted synchronization, rendering it unreliable.
Samples collected from the melt traces confirmed them to be glassy material, resulting from ordinary basalt exposed to ultra-high temperatures for a very short duration. However, the energy source required for its formation and the mechanism causing localized communication disruptions remain entirely unidentified. It is highly unlikely that this phenomenon is naturally occurring. Authorities are currently focusing on identifying the recurrence cycle and trigger conditions.
During a follow-up investigation on September 12, 2023, several new traces were confirmed near existing melt marks. This strongly suggests the ongoing nature of the phenomenon. Authorities have determined that this incident is not merely a natural phenomenon or a misidentification.
This incident is an unexplained phenomenon possessing both physical impact and information suppression capabilities. Continued surveillance and data collection are a top priority for our agency.

Witness Testimony
Geologist AThe light, silently hovering and moving slowly across the night sky, seemed to possess intent. The intense heat was abnormal, distorting the air around it. GPS was completely useless.
Nomad BThat is 'Dalo's Eye.' It has appeared in the desert since ancient times. It melts everything it touches. It is something not to be seen. Even communication devices stop working.
Kyu's Analysis
It cannot be definitively declared a natural phenomenon. Data corruption and communication blackouts suggest intentional information concealment. Continuous surveillance is essential.
