On four separate occasions between 2022 and 2023, climbers and a guide on Mount Takao (599 m) in Hachioji, Tokyo, observed a sharply defined weather boundary along the mountain's summit ridge — clear sky on the east face, heavy local rainfall on the west, with the division spanning only tens of meters. The boundary persisted for two or more hours in multiple cases. A meteorological researcher noted that while localized convergence zones do form in the Takao area, the reported sharpness and duration exceed standard meteorological model predictions. Japan Meteorological Agency has opened an investigation.
Details
Mount Takao, approximately 50 kilometers from central Tokyo, draws over 3 million visitors annually and is among the world's most-climbed mountains. Its location at the border of the Kantō Plain and the hill zone makes it prone to localized weather, but the phenomena recorded here were noted as extreme even by that standard.
On June 3, 2022, a climbing instructor in his forties observed from the summit ridge that the eastern side (toward Hachioji) was in full clear sun, while the western flank and lower slopes (toward Sagamiko) were under a black rain cloud producing heavy rainfall. The boundary lay exactly on the summit ridge, with conditions changing completely within tens of meters. The situation persisted for over two hours.
Four similar events were documented across 2022 and 2023. In one case, multiple climbers reported standing on the boundary and experiencing sunshine and warmth on one side of the body while the other side was wet from rain simultaneously.
A meteorologist noted: "Takao's location does support localized convergence zone formation. However, a distinct boundary persisting for more than two hours is more pronounced than standard meteorological models predict for this terrain." Detailed on-site atmospheric observation data is insufficient for conclusive analysis; the Japan Meteorological Agency has characterized this as an interesting case and opened a review.
Mount Takao is traditionally held to be the home of tengu (mountain spirits) in Japanese folklore, with a local tradition of "tengu's rain" being familiar to regular climbers. Some visitors prefer this explanation.
