The first report, August 2021, came from a woman in her thirties jogging on wet sand at the water's edge in the early morning. She heard what she described as a singing voice from beneath her feet. Stopping and lowering her ear to the sand, she confirmed the presence of sound. She described it as having "the intonation of enka or folk song — not words I could understand, but definitely a singing pattern."
Singing sand — the production of audible sound through friction between sand grains — is a documented phenomenon in dunes and beaches. Kujūkuri's fine-grain sand has been identified as having conditions favorable to acoustic resonance.
