Between 2020 and 2022, six groups of climbers on Mount Gassan in Yamagata (1,984 m) reported seeing human-shaped silhouettes in thick fog that moved independently of the observers' own movements — distinct from the Brocken spectre phenomenon, in which one's own shadow is projected onto fog. A meteorological specialist confirmed that multiple light sources can produce multiple halos, but that independently moving humanoid silhouettes are not predicted by standard Brocken spectre physics. Mount Gassan is a Shugendo sacred peak among the Three Mountains of Dewa.
Details
Mount Gassan, one of the Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa in Yamagata Prefecture, is a center of Shugendo asceticism. Dense fog is common from summer through autumn; Brocken spectres are a relatively familiar occurrence on the mountain.
The first report, August 2020, came from a guided group of five climbers in their twenties. On the summit ridge in dense fog, all five observed glowing humanoid silhouettes in the mist. The guide explained them as Brocken spectres, but all five reported that the figures moved independently of their own movements. One climber's account: "When I raised my arm, the figure raised its arm. But a second figure appeared from a different direction and had not raised its arm."
Three similar reports were filed in 2021; two in 2022. One solo climber in his forties described: "At first I accepted it as my own shadow — it moved toward me when I moved toward it. Then a third figure appeared from the side, moving independently. My shadow was in front; the side figure moved on its own."
A meteorological specialist noted that multiple light sources (sun and reflected sky light) can produce multiple Brocken halos, but independently moving humanoid silhouettes are not a predicted product of the standard Brocken spectre mechanism. Within Shugendo tradition, such experiences on sacred peaks are interpreted as trials sent by the mountain deity.
