Summary

Between 2019 and 2023, dune researchers and residents at Nakatajima Sand Dunes in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, recorded five instances of specific dune crests moving at six to twelve times the normally observed rate — in one case, 22 meters within two weeks, a distance typically accumulated over a full year. Wind data did not account for the observed speed in most cases. Ground-penetrating radar confirmed a subsurface high-density zone but was assessed as insufficient to fully explain the anomalous movement rates. Local fishermen regard rapid dune movement as a storm omen, and typhoons followed two of the anomalous movement periods.

Details

Nakatajima Sand Dunes on the Pacific coast of southern Hamamatsu are among Japan's largest dune systems. Dune movement is continuously monitored by researchers; under normal conditions, even in strong wind, monthly movement is typically 1–2 meters.

The first anomaly was discovered in November 2019 during routine monthly survey: a specific crest had moved approximately 12 meters since the prior month's reading — six to twelve times the normal rate. Wind records for the month showed only one day of strong wind; a single-day wind event producing 12 meters of displacement would substantially exceed the theoretical limit for wind-driven sand transport.

Four further anomalous movements were recorded between 2020 and 2023. The largest — 22 meters in two weeks — was noted by a researcher as "not present even in typhoon-direct-strike records for this dune field."

The possibility of subsurface structural change promoting sand slippage was explored. Ground-penetrating radar in 2022 identified a high-density layer 1–3 meters below the affected crest that had not been captured in prior surveys. Whether this contributes to anomalous movement rates is under analysis; the researcher found it insufficient to fully explain the observed velocities.

Local fishermen have a tradition associating sudden Nakatajima sand movement with approaching storms. Typhoons followed within the subsequent season in both 2019 and 2022.

Kyu's Analysis

The dune moved at ten times normal speed. Subsurface structure partly explains it. The speed does not. Nakatajima's sand knows about storms.
