Mount Ōmine (Sanjōgatake) in Yoshino, Nara, stands at 1,719 meters and has been the central site of Shugendo — Japan's mountain asceticism tradition — for centuries. It remains one of the few locations in Japan maintaining a women's exclusion rule; white-robed practitioners ascend to the Ōminesen-ji at the summit. The incident occurred during a group pilgrimage on August 14, 2022.
At approximately 2:00 p.m., the lead practitioner of an eight-person group descending from the summit called out that something luminous was moving above the ridgeline. All eight stopped and observed. The object was approximately diamond (rhomboidal) in shape with a metallic reflective surface. It moved in a direction opposite to the prevailing wind at an estimated altitude of 50–100 meters above the ridge. Its estimated size was 1–2 meters; it reflected sunlight clearly. No sound was produced. The observation continued for approximately eight minutes, after which the object moved east and disappeared behind a ridge.
One practitioner captured approximately ten seconds of video footage on a smartphone. The footage shows a moving reflective object maintaining consistent altitude relative to cloud reference points.
The following day, the Osaka Aeronautical Bureau confirmed that no aircraft, drone, or balloon had been authorized to fly over the Ōmine area at the relevant time. Japan Meteorological Agency balloon launch records showed no match.
The practitioners stated: "Seeing things during practice is not unusual, but what we saw was physically concrete. We've never seen anything like that." Within the Shugendo tradition, one interpretation offered was "a messenger from the heavens sending a trial." The Bureau continues to investigate the physical nature of the object.
