The High-Speed Underwater Object in Lake Kasumigaura
Summary
In the summer of 2021, four kayakers and boaters on Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture reported a dark, fast-moving object 1–2 meters beneath the surface. Estimated at 2–3 meters in length and described as moving at vehicle speed, the object changed direction when approached and left a trail of small bubbles. A prefectural fisheries institute dive survey found no large organisms; underwater acoustic monitoring detected no mechanical propulsion sounds. Biological and artificial-device explanations each pose unresolved problems.
Details
Lake Kasumigaura is Japan's second-largest lake, located in southeastern Ibaraki Prefecture. Its maximum depth is only 7.3 meters. Freshwater fish including eel and carp are abundant; the lake is frequently used by recreational boaters and kayakers. The shallow depth limits the concealment available to any large organism.
On July 3, 2021, a male kayaker in his thirties observed a large, dark object passing 1–2 meters below the surface near the center of the lake. He estimated its length at 2–3 meters and described its speed as "comparable to a car at 40–50 km/h." He saw no scales or visible lateral line features; the body surface appeared uniformly smooth and dark.
Three similar reports from the lake's northeastern area were filed before month's end. One witness — fishing from a motorboat — attempted to approach the object; it changed direction and moved away. Another witness observed small bubbles in the wake, suggesting some form of propulsion.
In August, the Ibaraki Prefectural Fisheries Research Institute dispatched dive investigators to the area. No large organisms beyond standard species were found. An underwater acoustic monitor deployed in the area recorded no sounds consistent with mechanical propulsion. The survey period (three days) produced no new witness reports.
A fisheries scientist assessed: "Kasumigaura has a maximum depth of 7.3 meters. If a 2–3 meter unidentified organism were active in this lake from spring through summer, existing fishing operations would detect it. Biological origin is unlikely. Remotely operated underwater vehicles exist for research, military, and recreational use, but a specific operational purpose for extended movement across the lake is unclear."
