Summary

Between 2019 and 2023, night security staff and late-night pilgrims at Okunoin — the innermost sacred ground of Kōyasan in Wakayama — filed multiple reports of human figures in pale garments moving silently along the stone-paved approach to the mausoleum. The stone path normally produces clear footfall sounds. In all cases, no sound was heard and the figure vanished before approach was completed. A 2023 investigation recorded footsteps and fabric movement on a digital recorder during a period when no visible pilgrim was present.

Details

Kōyasan's Okunoin is the holiest site on the mountain, housing the mausoleum of Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai), who is believed to remain in a state of eternal meditation within. The Tōrōdō (lantern hall) burns thousands of offerings lights around the clock. Deep night to early morning, when foot traffic is minimal, is when the reported phenomena concentrate.

The first recorded case, in November 2019, involved a night security guard in his fifties who observed a white-robed figure ahead of him on the stone-paved approach path. No footsteps were audible on the stone surface. When he called out and moved toward the figure, it disappeared among the rows of stone lanterns. No one was found in the area afterward.

Three similar reports were recorded between 2020 and 2021; two more in 2022. All described a figure in white or pale clothing, visible under the path lighting, producing no sound, and disappearing upon approach. One 2022 report described the figure as walking with hands pressed together in prayer posture.

In 2023, a researcher spent several hours overnight on the path with a digital audio recorder. The recorder captured what appeared to be footsteps and fabric sounds on multiple occasions during periods when no visible pilgrim was present. The investigator noted that the timing of these recorded sounds did not correspond to any pilgrim whose passage was visually confirmed during the session.

Kōyasan monks offered: "People who come to Okunoin in sincere faith have sometimes had spiritual experiences here through the centuries. Whether Kōbō Daishi's presence takes visible form is a matter of personal faith."

Witness Testimony

Night security guard (male, 50s)"A white-robed person was walking ahead. Stone paving — but no sound. I called out and moved toward them. They disappeared between the lanterns. No one was there afterward. Strange rather than frightening."
Pilgrim (female, 60s)"Near the Mikurobashi bridge I saw a white shape ahead. I thought it was a pilgrim. But there was no sound at all. The figure disappeared before the bridge. I decided it was a messenger of Kōbō Daishi."
Researcher (male, 40s)"The recorder had footsteps on it. But at those moments, no one was there. Sound was recorded that by rights should not have been. There is something here I cannot explain."

Kyu's Analysis

A silent figure walks Okunoin. The recorder catches sounds with no body to make them. Kōbō Daishi may still be walking his rounds.
