Details
Sakurajima, a highly active stratovolcano in Kagoshima Bay, recorded more than twenty explosive eruptions from its Minamidake summit crater in March 2024. Volcanic lightning accompanying eruptions is a documented natural phenomenon. The luminous formations reported this month, however, had a character distinct from the irregular discharge patterns of standard volcanic lightning.
On the night of March 5, several Kagoshima city residents reported triangular light outlines appearing within the illuminated eruption plume. A photographer monitoring the volcano from a city viewpoint captured photographs in rapid succession showing what he described as a rhomboidal luminous object within the smoke column. The images were submitted to the Kagoshima Meteorological Observatory, which confirmed no evidence of digital alteration.
Further reports on March 12 and 23 described the same basic phenomenon. The March 12 witness stated: "Every time an eruption cloud went up, a triangle of light appeared and disappeared within ten to twenty seconds." The March 23 witness initially mistook the object for a star before observing it move in sync with an eruption. No corresponding radar returns were recorded at Kagoshima Airport.
A volcanology specialist commented: "Volcanic lightning can exhibit edge-defined shapes at cloud boundaries, but its typical expression is irregular discharge. A consistent triangle or rhombus appearing repeatedly across separate eruptions is difficult to explain with standard volcanic lightning models." The specialist emphasized that additional instrumental data would be required for meaningful analysis.
The Bureau acknowledges that geometric pattern perception in long-distance photographs of complex atmospheric phenomena (pareidolia) is a known cognitive effect. Objective analysis of the photographic data has been requested from an independent imaging laboratory.
