On July 12, 2018, an unknown material with a unique crystalline structure was observed to periodically appear and disappear within a short timeframe on the seafloor at approximately 150m depth in the waters surrounding the Raja Ampat Islands, Indonesia. This phenomenon brought about abnormal fluctuations in ambient water temperature, salinity, and pH values, simultaneously causing localized electromagnetic interference. On July 12, 2018, at 14:37, a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) conducting marine biological surveys in the waters surrounding the Raja Ampat Islands, Indonesia, at a depth of approximately 150m, suddenly recorded high-frequency noise and severe distortion in its camera feed. Approximately 15 minutes later, when the feed recovered, a geometric structure emitting a faint internal light, not typically found in the seabed, appeared. It was a highly transparent crystalline substance, clearly distinct from the surrounding marine environment.
Initially, the ROV operator attributed the incident to equipment malfunction. However, similar anomalies were reported multiple times in different locations within the same sea area over several months. In response to these reports, the Authority dispatched a team of experts to conduct detailed seafloor investigations using manned submersibles and ROVs. The investigations confirmed that the observed structures were crystalline, formed specific geometric patterns, and possessed the characteristic of disappearing without a trace within hours to days after their appearance. Local fishermen have ancient legends passed down about “stones of light from the seabed,” sometimes associated with specific tides or lunar cycles.
The Authority's expert team established a multi-faceted observation system incorporating sonar, magnetic surveys, and underwater cameras. Observation data revealed that powerful electromagnetic waves in specific frequency bands were periodically detected almost simultaneously with the appearance of the structures. Furthermore, the ambient water temperature temporarily rose by up to 5°C, and salinity and pH values showed abnormal fluctuations inexplicable by known oceanic variations. These environmental changes tended to return rapidly to normal values with the disappearance of the structures.
Several attempts were made to recover samples to ascertain the material's identity. Only minute fragments were successfully collected. These samples exhibited anomalous isotopic ratios, differing from the elemental composition of known terrestrial substances, and their physical stability was extremely low. During measurement within analytical instruments, the samples rapidly decomposed and ultimately vanished completely. Weak luminescence and high-frequency sounds were recorded during this disappearance process.
Detailed seafloor topographic surveys suggested the phenomenon might be occurring along specific seafloor fracture zones. However, a direct causal relationship between the activity patterns of these fracture zones and the appearance and disappearance of the material has not been established. The source of the electromagnetic waves and the energy mechanism behind the material's generation and decomposition also remain unexplained by current scientific knowledge. Observed peculiarities differ from effects caused by existing geothermal or submarine volcanic activities.
The Authority considers the possibility that this incident originates from unelucidated geological processes within the Earth's interior or an unknown energy source, and plans to expand the observation range and collect long-term data. While certain periodicities are confirmed, their prediction remains extremely difficult. A comprehensive understanding of the material's composition, appearance/disappearance mechanism, and its impact on the surrounding environment has not been achieved.
