Case No. #1353
Case of Periodic Moaning, Local Cold and Humid Zone, and Shadow Appearances in Kandana Range, Kalutara District, Sri Lanka
Summary
In the pre-dawn hours of March 14, 2018, an inexplicable phenomenon was reported in the abandoned tea plantation area at the foot of the Kandana Range in Kalutara District, southwestern Sri Lanka. Particularly at night, faint moaning sounds emanate from around specific ancient trees, accompanied by an abnormal drop in ambient temperature and persistently high humidity. This phenomenon interferes with electronic devices, causing recording equipment to capture unusual noise or temporarily malfunction. Occasionally, human-like shadows appear briefly within the mist, resembling the attire of past plantation laborers, only to vanish quickly. The Authority continues to monitor this case.
Details
At approximately 03:20 on March 14, 2018, reports of suspicious sounds were received by the Authority from local residents in the former Kadurawatta Plantation area at the foot of the Kandana Range. The reports described periodic moaning sounds at night, originating from a section deep within the abandoned laborer's quarters, where several centuries-old ancient trees stood. This area has long been neglected and is now covered by dense jungle.
Initial investigations recorded an average ambient temperature 8°C lower than the surroundings in the vicinity of the reported ancient trees. Furthermore, despite dry seasons, the ancient trees and surrounding ground were consistently covered in fine water droplets, maintaining high humidity. This phenomenon was unaffected by weather and tended to be most pronounced from night until dawn.
Local oral traditions speak of the tragedies of laborers who suffered harsh conditions and lost their lives during the former plantation era. A strong belief persists that the souls of those who died in accidents during tea-picking in the mountainous regions reside in specific trees. The Authority suggests that this tradition may have contributed to an uneasy atmosphere in the area even before the incident.
Automatic recording devices set up by the Authority's investigation team captured indistinct audio resembling human voices multiple times, but no discernible language or words were present. Simultaneously, electronic devices such as high-sensitivity microphones and thermal cameras exhibited random malfunctions and data loss during specific periods. This anomaly cannot be explained by known electromagnetic interference.
At 01:55 on May 7, 2019, surveillance cameras recorded a human-shaped shadow momentarily appearing within the dense fog of the monitored area. The shadow, though ambiguous, displayed characteristics resembling the crude clothing worn by plantation laborers of that era. This shadow vanished within seconds as if dissolving into the fog, leaving no trace behind. Multiple similar sightings have been reported.
The Authority concludes that multiple eyewitness accounts and electronic device records indicate the presence of a consistent anomalous phenomenon in this region. However, its generation mechanism, true nature, and specific connection to local traditions remain largely unclear. Particularly, the causes of the cold and humid zone and the physical origin of the moaning sounds are currently unexplainable by science.
This incident suggests the possibility of unknown energies manifesting in a location where specific natural environments intersect with memories of human tragedy. The Authority is attempting to identify the recurrence cycle and trigger conditions of the phenomenon, but no clear pattern has yet been determined. This location remains under strict surveillance.

Witness Testimony
Local Resident AWhen I wake up at night, I hear that sound from outside. It's like someone is suffering. It definitely comes from those old trees. My body always feels cold there.
Descendant of Former Plantation Laborer BMy grandfather often said that those who died in the mountains are still lamenting under those trees. My grandfather also said he heard the same sounds.
Investigator C (Anonymous)The hygrometer at the site constantly exceeded 90%, and there was a chill that clung to the skin. The recorded audio was full of noise, making analysis impossible, but something was undoubtedly being emitted.
Kyu's Analysis
The Authority's surveillance continues. Cases involving specific historical backgrounds and geographical conditions consistently show inexplicable signs.
