Details
On March 15, 2018, a geological survey team experienced the initial anomaly at an elevation of approximately 4,000 meters in the Atacama Highlands. During their exploration work, they visually confirmed the surrounding rocks changing to a vivid purple color, simultaneously testifying that the sound of an explosion reached them several seconds late. This initial report was dismissed as an illusion caused by altitude sickness.
However, over the following years, multiple similar reports were received from tourists and mountaineers visiting the same region. Numerous testimonies describe distorted perspectives, malfunctioning rangefinders, and landscapes that seemed to waver as if viewed through a warped mirror. A commonality noted was the phenomena being particularly pronounced shortly after sunrise and at sunset. Among the local Atacameño people, there are traditions of specific places referred to as 'Pachamama's Domain,' where one should not enter.
In November 2021, due to the frequent occurrences of the phenomena, authorities dispatched a detailed investigation team. The team focused their observations on a particular valley, and on April 22, 2022, at 14:37, they personally experienced spatial distortion and acoustic delay at that location. Laser rangefinders temporarily showed abnormal distances, and radio communications experienced a delay of several seconds. Multiple team members reported visually confirming the rock faces before them transforming into a bluish-green hue.
During the phenomenon's occurrence, the authorities' monitoring equipment recorded temporary electromagnetic disturbances and extremely faint fluctuations in the gravitational field. However, these data had low reproducibility and did not always synchronize with the phenomenon. High-precision acoustic sensors detected unnatural attenuation and phase shifts in specific frequency bands, but the recorded sound sources themselves showed no clear signs of manipulation. Investigations into specific mineral compositions and geomagnetic anomalies also failed to identify any peculiar correlations.
After the phenomena subsided, no noticeable changes were observed in the soil or rocks at the site.
