In the afternoon of August 17, 2022, multiple trekking parties passing through a specific ravine, provisionally named “Simard Canyon,” in Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains, simultaneously experienced anomalous perceptual changes. A guide walking at the front testified that the party behind him suddenly appeared stretched out and distant, making a mere few meters feel like several kilometers. Concurrently, he perceived the second hand of his wristwatch moving at an abnormal speed, experiencing several minutes as if they were hours.
Over the following days, multiple similar reports were confirmed in the same region. Local elders informed the authorities that this canyon has long been known as “the place where time gets lost” or “the valley where voices from the past echo.” They stated having experienced phenomena where sounds of distant events are heard delayed, or faint conversations from an as-yet-unoccurred future are audible under specific seasonal or weather conditions. Initial investigations by the authorities identified common geographical features among these testimonies.
In the late 1990s, an expedition group passing through this valley also recorded wandering in the same spot for several hours within a dense fog, ultimately delaying their arrival at their destination by more than half a day. Their diaries repeatedly noted peculiar acoustic phenomena, such as distant bird calls sounding as if they were right next to their ears. These records suggest that the phenomenon is not an isolated occurrence.
In September 2022, authorities dispatched an elite investigation team equipped with high-precision GPS, portable atomic clocks, wide-area acoustic sensors, and LiDAR scanners. However, all these precision instruments exhibited anomalous behavior within the canyon. GPS data randomly jumped coordinates, atomic clocks recorded errors ranging from minutes to hours, and acoustic sensors detected unrecorded noise and asynchronous voices.
A deployed drone recorded a trajectory that deviated significantly from its programmed flight path, yet the drone's flight logs showed no record of unusual operations or external interference. Recovered drone footage captured the mountainside appearing to unnaturally stretch and contract, as if physical space itself was twisted.
