On April 12, 2023, while guiding through the jungles of Makale, Tana Toraja, Mr. Adi Wirawan, a local guide, discovered a transparent viscous liquid bubbling up from the ground, covering and rapidly discoloring and disintegrating large stones. The liquid emitted a strong putrid odor, and surrounding vegetation showed abnormal discoloration. Mr. Wirawan reported the anomaly to the authorities, but it was initially dismissed as a geological phenomenon or a hoax.
Weeks later, on May 1, a similar viscous liquid and material decomposition phenomenon occurred at another location, approximately 1.5 km from the initial discovery site. This time, wood exposed to the liquid rapidly transformed as if carbonized, and several residents working nearby reported headaches, nausea, and loss of balance. Following this second incident, authorities promptly dispatched a survey team. The team confirmed local elders' oral traditions of "water that melts stone" periodically appearing in specific "forbidden lands" in the region.
