Case No. #1213
Republic of Congo, Likouala Region Rainforest: Periodic Low-Frequency Roars, Large-Scale Vegetation Destruction, and Unidentified Giant Creature Sightings
Summary
On the night of June 17, 2023, low-frequency roars, audible in settlements kilometers away, periodically resonated through the vast rainforests of the Likouala Region in the Republic of Congo. This phenomenon has been linked to extensive vegetation destruction and reports of an unidentified giant creature. Authorities have determined that this incident involves multiple anomalies not explainable by mere wildlife activity. Locals fear the reappearance of "Mokele-mbembe," a creature from ancient legends. Similar incidents have been recorded in this area in the past, prompting the authorities to launch a detailed investigation.
Details
At 11:15 PM on June 17, 2023, residents of Buyarma village in the Likouala Region first reported unusual low-frequency vibrations and roars emanating from deep within the forest. The sound shook the earth, causing houses several kilometers away to subtly vibrate. The following morning, villagers venturing towards the sound's origin discovered a swath of felled trees of an unimaginable scale, along with gigantic footprints clearly not attributable to humans or any known animal.
Phenomena of this kind bear a strong resemblance to the ancient legend of the Mokele-mbembe, an unidentified creature said to inhabit the Likouala Region. Local lore describes this creature as residing in swamps and deep rivers, appearing at specific times. Past records include reports of an encounter by a German expedition group in 1932, and an American research team allegedly discovering indirect traces in 1981. All these accounts share commonalities: a massive creature emitting low-frequency sounds and causing significant environmental impact. More recently, in 2022, several suspicious instances of vegetation destruction and sightings of large underwater shadows were reported, though none provided conclusive evidence.
An initial investigative team from the authorities was dispatched to the site. Their analysis of the fallen tree area indicated the possibility of an extremely powerful yet localized physical force, distinct from typical storms or known large animal damage. Multiple trees were snapped at their base or crushed, on a scale far exceeding that of known elephants. Furthermore, the remaining footprints measured approximately 60 centimeters in diameter, displaying three thick, toe-like impressions, but no DNA samples could be collected.
Concurrently, a network of wide-area acoustic sensors recorded intermittent ultra-low-frequency sounds, below the human hearing threshold of 10Hz, sporadically since June 17. However, the sound source was constantly moving, preventing precise identification. Automated cameras installed by the investigation team captured large, indistinct shadows moving through the forest at night on multiple occasions. The shadowy forms suggested a quadrupedal creature with a long neck and body, but dense trees and mist obstructed clear imagery.
Moreover, multiple electronic devices in the vicinity experienced unexplained malfunctions and battery abnormalities. Instances of GPS devices misreporting locations and communication equipment temporarily failing were documented. These anomalies tended to synchronize with the occurrence of low-frequency sounds. Such widespread effects on electronic equipment are not consistent with known animal ecological responses.
Eyewitness testimonies were collected not only from villagers but also from hunters and fishermen in the surrounding areas. All described a creature extending a long neck from the water or a gigantic shadow moving slowly through the forest. While details varied, the accounts largely concurred on the creature's immense size, distinctive shape, and its impact on the surrounding environment. The authorities have concluded that this phenomenon is a singular incident that cannot be dismissed as mere mass hallucination or misidentification. Unidentified elements continue to exist within this ecosystem.

Witness Testimony
Witness A (Buyarma Village Resident)I woke up in the middle of the night because my whole house was shaking. A low rumble came from deep in the forest, and the ground felt like it was vibrating. When I went into the forest in the morning, many trees were down, and there were huge footprints I had never seen before. That must have been the Mokele-mbembe.
Witness B (Hunter)I saw a long neck sticking out of the water in the swamp on the opposite bank of the river. It was much larger than an elephant, and brownish in color. It submerged quickly, so that was all I saw, but I am certain it was not just a crocodile. There is something unknown in this forest.
Kyu's Analysis
