Case No. #1127
Sweden, Northern Torneträsk Lake, Silent Oval Flying Object and Anomalous Time Perception Incident
Summary
On July 19, 1946, over Northern Torneträsk Lake in Sweden, a pitch-black oval-shaped flying object was observed by multiple witnesses. The object hovered completely silently in the air, and anomalous time perception was reported in its vicinity. Authorities recorded multiple testimonies and physical traces, but its true nature remains unidentified. This incident is associated with the "ghost rocket" phenomenon prevalent across Sweden post-war but contains many unexplainable characteristics.
Details
Around 10:15 PM on July 19, 1946, by the shore of Torneträsk Lake, located near Kiruna in northern Sweden, fishermen Johan Eriksson and his wife Maria Eriksson discovered a peculiar object hovering motionless over the central part of the lake. The object, estimated to be about 10 meters in diameter, had a smooth, pitch-black surface and emitted no light or propulsion sound. It did not reflect the moonlight on the lake surface, appearing as if a mass of shadow simply existed there. The couple observed the object for over 30 minutes.
At the same time, Olof Svensson, a postal worker driving approximately 5 kilometers from the lake, also witnessed a similar object. According to his testimony, his engine temporarily malfunctioned, and he experienced a sensation of his watch stopping for several minutes. Such silent flying objects were widely reported as "ghost rockets" across Sweden immediately after World War II. While many were attributed to meteors or misidentification, some cases remained unexplainable. The Torneträsk Lake incident stood out with particularly strong physical evidence and multiple independent testimonies.
Investigations by authorities revealed no radiation or magnetic anomalies on the lake's ice where the object was presumed to have hovered. However, a circular impression, approximately 5 meters in diameter, where the snow appeared compressed, was confirmed. This trace maintained its shape for several days until it was completely covered by subsequent snowfall. Local residents spoke of ancient legends concerning "flying shadows" over the lake, suggesting the incident might not be an isolated phenomenon. Authorities proceeded to cross-reference with historical records.
Initial investigations by authorities suggested the ice impression could be a natural phenomenon or a landing mark from an unidentified aircraft. However, the uniform compression of the mark did not align with natural avalanches or wind, and no aircraft of that era possessed the technology for such silent, motionless flight. While the witnesses' anomalous time perception was dismissed as psychological, the testimonies of the Erikssons and Svensson remarkably coincided regarding the object's shape, color, silence, and hovering position. Svensson's pocket watch, recovered by authorities, showed unusual magnetization, but whether this was caused by the object or merely age-related degradation could not be determined.
Furthermore, the Swedish military, conducting radar observations in the lake area at the time, claimed no unusual radar responses were recorded at this specific hour. However, the limitations of radar technology at the time, and the possibility that the object possessed properties to transmit or absorb radar waves, cannot be ruled out. Authorities conducted geological and electromagnetic surveys of the surrounding area but failed to identify any specific anomalies. This incident encapsulated multiple contradictions that could not be simply dismissed as misidentification.
Authorities classified the Torneträsk Lake incident as an "unexplained aerial phenomenon" and continued to gather further sighting reports. However, the object has not reappeared in this region since. This incident remains one of the most specific and inexplicable cases among the more than 2,000 "ghost rocket" phenomena reported in Sweden from 1946 to 1947. Authorities decided to freeze the file, anticipating future analysis through technological advancements.

Witness Testimony
Witness A (Johan Eriksson)That was no airplane. It made no sound, just floated there. It looked like a black shadow. I felt a strange sensation, like time had stopped.
Witness B (Olof Svensson)My engine started acting up, and my watch stopped too. A black, egg-shaped object was drifting overhead. I felt a chill, but it wasn't fear. It was a strange silence.
Kyu's Analysis
Silent flying objects are numerous, but the simultaneity of anomalous time perception and physical traces is rare. Such incidents often occur in information vacuums. Additional information is required for elucidation.
