Summary

In the early hours of December 14, 2021, multiple hunters in the vast forested area surrounding Lucy Lake, Yukon Territory, Canada, recorded an inexplicable low-frequency roar. The sound differed from that of any known animal, accompanied by vibrations difficult for human hearing to fully perceive. Weeks later, massive footprint-like impressions, exceeding the scale of any known large animal, were discovered in the surrounding snow. Authorities have yet to identify the cause of the phenomenon, leaving this case unexplained.

Details

At 03:17 on December 14, 2021, a group of local hunters on a winter expedition, approximately 15 km north of Lucy Lake, heard a peculiar booming sound. Initially, they suspected a large-scale landslide or avalanche, but they testified that the nature of the sound was closer to the “roar of a creature” emanating from a specific direction. Their handheld recorder captured low-frequency sounds at abnormal levels, outside the typical audible range.

Over the following weeks, similar roars were sporadically heard within a 30 km radius of Lucy Lake. Local Indigenous communities speak of ancient legends concerning a “Giant Beast of the Freezing Forest” dwelling in this region. Their lore describes this creature appearing during the deepest part of winter, emitting a voice that echoes from deep within the earth. Similar low-frequency sounds and colossal footprints were reported in the 1980s, but no concrete investigation was conducted at that time.

Authorities' investigation team began acoustic analysis and on-site verification in January 2022. The recorded sound source did not match the vocalization patterns of any known animal. Furthermore, approximately 5 km southeast of Lucy Lake, a massive depression measuring about 60 cm in length and 35 cm in width was discovered in the snow. While resembling an animal's footprint, its size far exceeded that of large animals endemic to the region, such as grizzly bears or moose. The surrounding snow was abnormally compressed, and a small but significant residual heat was measured at the center of the impression, a phenomenon not explainable by known freezing processes.

The investigation team installed automatic recorders and thermal imaging cameras, but no abnormal roars were documented over the subsequent weeks. However, on February 3, 2022, one of the installed cameras deep in the forest temporarily malfunctioned. Upon restoration, the snow around the camera was found to be inexplicably melted. Traces of unknown organic matter were detected in the melted area, but its origin could not be identified.

Authorities' experts also considered the possibility that the reported low-frequency sounds were generated by geophysical phenomena, such as micro-earthquakes or large-scale landslides. However, neither seismic records nor topographical surveys have found evidence of such large natural phenomena occurring in this region. Analysis of sound wave propagation also indicated that the sound source was not fixed, which weakens the natural phenomenon hypothesis.

The harsh sub-zero environment and vast unexplored territory of the area significantly impede the progress of the investigation. Snowfall is consistently deep, requiring substantial effort for the installation and maintenance of observation equipment. Additionally, the abundance of wildlife increases the risk of unexpected damage to installed cameras and sensors. Authorities plan to enhance remote monitoring systems and introduce new sensors capable of detecting specific frequency bands.

The traces, sound sources, and local legends suggest the existence of a specific entity, but direct sighting or capture has not occurred. The low-frequency roars continue sporadically, and authorities have designated the Lucy Lake area as a special surveillance zone, continuing the investigation. This case strongly indicates the potential presence of an unknown creature inhabiting the vast unexplored regions of Northern Canada.

Witness Testimony

Hunter AThat sound was like a groan from the depths of the earth, resonating deep in my belly, unlike any animal sound I'd ever heard. Fear paralyzed my body.
Indigenous ResidentOur ancient legends speak of the 'Giant Beast of the Freezing Land' residing in the winter forest. Its voice makes the snow tremble and chills the soul. This is a sign of its presence.

Kyu's Analysis

The correlation between the unknown low-frequency sounds and physical traces cannot be ignored. This case strongly suggests the existence of a large unidentified creature in the unexplored Arctic regions. Unexplained. Record ongoing.
