Details
On March 14, 2018, around 3:00 PM, an area with an abnormally high ground temperature, more than 30 degrees Celsius above ambient, appeared at approximately 22°30′S, 22°0′E in the central Kalahari Desert, Botswana. This thermal zone, approximately 10 meters in radius, had hardened, desiccated sand around its perimeter. The initial report came from a San guide accompanying tourists. He testified that his group uniformly complained of "hearing distant flute music" and "the ground breathing," subsequently collapsing from dizziness.
Following this, similar thermal anomalies continued to occur at this location at intervals of several weeks, and multiple eyewitness accounts were recorded. Nomads and geological survey teams passing through the area also experienced disorientation and disturbing auditory hallucinations at this spot. Notably, some camping gear left by a geological surveyor was found transformed into a transparent, resin-like substance, despite showing no signs of exposure to high temperatures. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, authorities launched a full-scale investigation in January 2020.
The automated monitoring equipment installed by the investigation team recorded multiple thermal anomaly events. However, on-site investigations during these phenomena detected no anomalous heat source, nor were radioactive materials, strong magnetic fields, or unknown chemical substances found in the surrounding soil or atmosphere. Furthermore, when a drone was remotely piloted into the thermal zone, intermittent noise and luminescence were recorded in the transmitted footage; upon retrieval of the drone, its internal camera and data recording device had physically vanished.
Soil samples from the incident site exhibited unusual microcrystalline structures, with the possibility of trace amounts of unknown elements. These crystals differed from the surrounding sand, displaying high light refraction and extreme brittleness. Local San elders refer to this place as "Yakuba Kahala" (Shadow of Heat), a forbidden area passed down through generations. Their oral traditions bear a peculiar resemblance to the current phenomena.
