Summary

In December 1978, multiple anomalous aerial phenomena were observed over Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand. Most notably, a local television crew filmed luminous objects paralleling a commercial aircraft. These objects were also detected on radar, exhibiting extraordinary speed and erratic behavior. Despite multiple eyewitness accounts and tangible evidence, their true nature remains unidentified to this day. Official investigations by authorities failed to provide a conclusive explanation, and the incident is currently recorded as 'unexplained'.

Details

On the night of December 21, 1978, air traffic controllers at Wellington Airport detected multiple unidentified objects on their radar screens over the airspace off the South Island of New Zealand. Concurrently, the pilot of a Fokker F27 commercial transport aircraft flying over Kaikoura reported observing a massive, pulsating light. These objects reportedly crossed the aircraft's path, moving at an incredible speed. This initial report prompted heightened alert within the authorities.

Over the subsequent days, similar sightings of luminous objects became frequent around Kaikoura. Of particular note was the incident on December 31. A crew from Wellington's ATN television station, aboard a Fokker F27, successfully filmed these lights during a flight over Kaikoura. The footage captured intense luminous objects appearing outside the aircraft's windows, exhibiting peculiar behaviors such as flying alongside the plane or performing abrupt accelerations and decelerations.

While the filmed objects were clearly recorded on radar, their flight patterns were entirely unlike any known aircraft. Initially, authorities attempted to offer conventional explanations, such as distant fishing boat lights, refracted light from Venus due to atmospheric phenomena, or aircraft flares. However, these explanations contradicted numerous aspects of the radar records, the detailed testimonies of multiple eyewitnesses, and particularly the professional insights of the pilots. Records also indicated multiple objects moving at varying speeds, abruptly disappearing and reappearing.

The observed objects were detected simultaneously by multiple air traffic control radars. Concurrently, several pilots, crew members, and passengers visually confirmed their presence. The recorded footage displayed complex movements and light changes that cannot be explained by simple optical phenomena. The initial investigations conducted by the authorities failed to resolve these phenomena.

The official conclusion by authorities was eventually attributed to astronomical phenomena or misidentification of ground lights, but this rebuttal largely contradicts the physical evidence and eyewitness testimonies presented. Specifically, the speed and trajectory of the objects captured by radar are utterly impossible for natural phenomena or conventional aircraft. Features such as 'disappearance' and 'pulsation' reported also remain unexplained.

Despite numerous pieces of evidence and prominent witnesses, this incident still lacks a definitive explanation for its true nature. Authorities have recorded the incident as 'unexplained'. The bureau continues to monitor for new verification or evidence regarding this case. Regular surveillance of this airspace will persist.

Timeline

  1. Circa 23:40, December 21, 1978Wellington ATC detected unidentified objects on radar. Concurrently, an F27 pilot sighted luminous objects over Kaikoura.
  2. Circa 01:00, December 23, 1978An F27 pilot again encountered multiple luminous objects over Kaikoura, reporting they were being followed.
  3. Circa 00:30, December 31, 1978A TV crew aboard an F27 aircraft filmed multiple luminous objects over Kaikoura, accompanied by radar records.
  4. Circa 02:00, December 31, 1978The filmed objects paralleled the aircraft, performing rapid accelerations, decelerations, and sudden stops. They then vanished at high speed.
  5. January 1979The Royal New Zealand Air Force began a full investigation into the incident, collecting eyewitness testimonies, video, and radar records.
  6. November 1979The Air Force released its investigation report. The final conclusion remained open, and the incident was classified as unexplained.

Witness Testimony

F27 Pilot (Bruce Cathie)It appeared suddenly and moved at an unbelievable speed. This movement is impossible for any known aircraft. It seemed to overtake our plane, then stopped abruptly and hovered in place.
TV Crew Member (David Crockett)What the camera captured was not just a distant light. It pulsated and seemed to be playing with the aircraft. What we filmed that day was undoubtedly something tangible.
Air Traffic Controller (Anonymous)Our screens showed something that shouldn't have existed. Yet, it was undeniably there. Multiple radars detected it simultaneously in the same location.

Kyu's Analysis

The official conclusion is insufficient. Multiple credible pieces of evidence exist, suggesting a presence beyond known physical laws. This incident requires continuous monitoring and recording.
